Mic pre suggestions

Hi guys, i am looking at some preamps to compliment what i already have in my studio. I own a millennia hv 35p, it sounds amazing, because even though it is a super clean preamp, it still adds some magic to the sound.

Now I’m looking for a mic preamp to give me a different sound to compliment what i already have. I mainly record vocals, and i use a Neumann tlm 193, a very neutral/darkish mic or a Rosswell delphos, a bright mic, but not harsh.

I was looking at the heritage 73 and liked it, but my main concern is, since the tlm 193 is already a tad dark that it would be too much for it. My other option is the Blue Robbie, to help me get in the tube vibe but I can’t find a lot of clips or videos on youtube about this preamp.

Im looking for a mic preamp that adds a little bit of excitement in the hi and mid hi freq.

My favorite preamp, which I use every day, is a D.W. Fearn VT-1, which I can't recommend highly enough. But for a little more affordability, and if you want to add some excitement in the hi and mid-hi frequencies, check out the AEA RPQ². Half the price of the Fearn, twice as many channels, great EQ and lots of options. I use it for ribbons, condensers and dynamics. Versatile preamp and a great buy for the money.

Every non-tube mic I run through my Demeter VTMP-2c sounds so much nicer. You see the 2b version come up used on Reverb sometimes. The differences are cosmetic so those can be bargains.

I tried a tlm103 with a warm audio tonebeast. I was really surprized how well the mic soaked up this pre. It made it creamy and softened the highs without hiding detail. I highly recommend it, and i prefer it to my api a2d as it sounds richer whilst the a2d was a bit chilly sounding. Thats pretty high praise...

The Millennia is neutral, so the sensible next choice could be a colored preamp.

Neumann mics work great with Neve preamps (including newer Neve stuff like Portico). So either a Neve or Neve clone might be good.

A heritage will be fine with that mic.
Or any 1073 type decent clone to the real deal..
To me the 1073 needs it’s simple eq , to be 1073 like...they belong together.

Another fine choice for a color pre is api312 or clones.

Pick your poison as to what you can afford, brand ,
Like, want..What ever, try to buy with a return policy.

I have a heritage elite, It’s a keeper. Would not call it a dark pre. But I would not call it in your face fast and super clean either...lol

And I build clone 1073s, but they cost a bunch to build..
cannot justify one of my handmade pres for my home studio.. The the HA is what I use at home.
