To stay high end in the low end forum, I’ll list three favorites under $1,000.

Radial MC3 passive monitor controller
Avantone MixCubes (active pair)
GIK Monster Bass Traps (whatever number adds up to $1,000)

Software
Slate bundle

Why did you go for that above an RME FireFace with more i/o? Just curious. I haven't done much research into Antelope interfaces.

Unless I'm missing a version of the Fireface (there are several) one with 4 mic pres cost a few hundred more(UFX). The even larger reason is my intent to use the Zen Tour for remote recording. In that situation the form factor of the Zen Tour was much better.

I've been happy with the interfacing for the Zen Tour. The touch screen, remote, etc. seem generally well considered. The RME likely would have been fine too.

Otherwise it having Thunderbolt connection was a plus for low latency (though RME is known for low latency), the ability to control over a phone or tablet remotely, and the built in emulations of useful hardware that cost me nothing and which they are still expanding. While the RME has more I/O the Zen Tour has a fair amount itself and I don't think it will be a limitation for me.

What the hell, I'll play:

- an MXL 2001-P mic with the Dave Royer tube mod
- an MXL 2001-P with the Scott Dorsey FET mod
- a Demeter VTMP-2B (I realize that's probably a pretty swanky piece of kit for the "Low End Theory" but hey, I guess that explains why it's one of my favorites!)

Plug-ins...um...
- SSL LMC-1
- Cycling '74 Pluggo
- MOTU Masterworks Compressor

My gear right now isn’t very good. I’ve sold most of it. I’m finding that getting sounds isn’t as important as writing, performance, arrangement. I once went into a pro studio and got great sounds individually, but the sum total was a mess. Anyway, here are the pieces I find most crucial:

Epiphone acoustic guitar. 1970s MIJ, has a warm, sweet tone you can’t get from newer guitars.

Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass. Best bass I could find for $300. Has TI flats and upgraded pickups.

Sennheiser HD600 headphones. I trust what I hear out of these things. Not flattering. They force me to work hard on a mix.

As far as software, I need a DAW. Big fan of Reaper. It’s fast and I like the workflow.

For drum sounds I use BFD2 with Platinum Samples. It’s not as good as a live drummer but I’ve got to make do.

What else... Cytomic The Glue. I use it on every mix.

When I’m satisfied with tracking and arrangements I’ll buy a month’s Slate subscription to mix. Still not satisfied though! Good is the enemy of great.

703 panels bass trap and cloud. this $300 shows me how much money I wasted on gear for better sound. (why didn't I listen sooner?)
Soundlux 195 makes me curious to what high end mics sound like
Shure sm7b It just works (play with the buttons)

Maschine 2.0 does anything and makes you feel like you aren't on a computer.
Waves DBX 160 comp/limit push your drums through this and jizz yourself
Gearslutz - makes all your money , and efforts more focused and better; or gets you completely sidetracked and lost!

Hardware

DDA Q mixing desk

Co owned with some friends but still...
Sounds great and has so many routing options that I still discover something new once in a blue moon after running it for three years. Fully modular so upgrades are possible

Sennheiser MKH-406

Old SDC which serves as my utility mic for most anything except electric guitars, bass and kick. Sounds between good and mindblowing on any voice I tried so far. Made a review for anyone who can be bothered. Actually the only mic I tried that can really stand up to it is the Sennheiser MD-441.

Revox B77 MKII HS

The third one was a bit harder. Could also have been my Fostex G16 since I record everything on it or my M201 since it's always busy on snare and guitars but since the sound quality of a well set up B77 stands up to pro machines it made it. Since I got it everything sounds more "like a record". Only problems is that the calibration pots are put in an annoying place and have limited options, the lack of a locate 0 and that it's a PITA to edit on. Besides that I couldnt have been happier and for the price it is kick ass.

Plugins

Don't use that except when discussing mastering with a client and the death sentence to our hard work ("I got a friend who can do it for free") comes up. I'm no ME but rather me and some gentle treatment than some noob giving it the "Californication" torture plus pumping.

Personally, I think either of those would make a more interesting thread that jabbering about recording equipment...but combining the two would be stellar!

Don’t forget “my... my... my...imagination”.
The poster before you doesn’t specify his exact gear, but you have one-upped him by listing gear that isn’t gear at all.

Thanks for answering a question for someone else, but I’m curious what eternalsound meant.

As for your definition of gear, it isn’t a definition of “gear”. And it isn’t meaningful in an audio discussion. “Oxygen, water, or gravity” is unlikely to replace “room treatment” as the generic “what you need” answer.
