Hey Andy, I’ve been eyeing the Beyerdynamic 930s for a while but also have been thinking about spending more. How do you like them compared to your Schoeps?

I don't own the scheopps — I was referring to the Scheps Omnichannel plugin!

I really, really like them. I wanted to upgrade my small condensers but was a bit cautious about spending cash. I had good look around and took some advice here. There are some great soundfile demos around comparing these to a certain Neuman SC.

I'm not going to argue about which is best except to say that these are very, very, good mics. i've used them for acoustic guitar a lot and even for voice interviews.

they have a built in high pass and a pad which is useful. these are seriously good mics.

Hard:
- Studio Projects B1 large diaphragm microphone, amazing value for this kind of money.
- GEM S2 synth:don't care that much for the sounds, but makes for a very good controller with extremely playable poly-aftertouch.
- Yamaha An1x: classic VA, amazing sound, bargain...

Soft:
- The entire Soundtoys bundle for something like $200, upgrading from their free plugins. Can't beat that.
- Softube Modular: so much fun...
- Logic Pro X. Obvious that you need a DAW, but boy... all the stuff you get with it...

If it weren't for Logic, I would have included Alchemy in the soft list. Bought it before Apple bought Camel. So now mentioning Logic automatically includes Alchemy. Justice is done.

b) Daking MicPre Eq
c) Neumann U87ai

Of course they'd all be useless without my RME Fireface UFX II

Near impossible task to pick 3 of each, but my most used are:

Hardware:
UA 1176
Kurzweil PC2x
Studio Technologies Mic-PreEminence modded by Jim Williams

Plugins:
DMG Equilibrium
EA Reverbs
Empirical Labs Distressor (UA)

Difficult list to make; I have about 12 'must have' plugins, 8 'must have' virtual Instruments (or collections), 4 'must have' mic preamps + microphones, monitors, keyboards, guitars, bass, etc. Fill 'must have' list:
Mic Pres:
UA 1176, ST Mic-PreEminence modded, Hamptone HJFP2, Demeter VTMP-2b
Instruments: Kurzweil PC2x, PC361; Fernandes Revolver Elite w sustainer, Floyd Rose & Ebony fret board; Fender Jazz w special pickups / electronics
Guitar Amp: modified Stromberg Carlson 34
Interface: RME Multiface II (outdated but reliable & low latency)
Monitors: NS10M Studios & JBL 4328s w 4312 Sub
Must have plugins:
EQ: Equilibrium, Brainworx Digital V3, Lindell EQ (for 'hair'), Wavesfactory Spectre (hair), US Pultec (hair)
Dyn: UAD Distressor, 1176 collection, LA2a, LA3a, API 2500, Sonnox Dynamics
Multi Dyn: UAD P. Multiband, Essence, Dynamic Spectrum Mapper V2
Side chain MB ducker: iZotope Alloy
Limiter: Sonnox Limiter, PS Xenon
FX: Soundtoys, Eventide, EA, Lexicon PCM, UAD 140, Lexicon 224, EP-34
Pitch & Temporal editing: Melodyne 4 Studio
Restoration: iZotope RX7 Advanced
VIs: HaLion 6, Kontakt 5, East West Play, Eduardo Tarilonte, Arturia 6 & Pigment, Synthmaster, 8DIO, SD3, SSD5, Vienna Heckelphone & Basset Horn
There are more, but these see frequent use. Use to have the Algorithmix EQs, but they weren't ported to 64 bit & the MAAT stuff is big investment.

It might be helpful to mention what kind of music you're mixing (if relevant). Head banger music will be very different than pop or hip hop. Folk jazz and classical also......

Atmospheric Breakbeat.. Korg EM1x covers all the beats/electronics, Roland SH-32 covers the distortion upper frequency spectrum and CS1x on the transcendent pads. I expect the Emu E5000 Ultra sampler (once it arrives) will take over the CS1x duties... will sample the CS1x pads and run them through the Z-plane filters (64 in total). Good times!

Ok, I'll bite:

Gear:

- Focusrite Liquid Chanel (yes, it's just a sofware in the box, but the box and the preamp is still very nice)

- AVID S3 (when Eucon works)

- an old pair of Klein & Hummel O300 speakers, I'm just so used to them.

Software:

- iZotope RX 7 Advanced - couldn't live without it

- Altiverb 7 the plugin itself is not something special anymore, but the IR library that comes with it definitely is.

- AutoAlign Post

honorable mention: anything Fabfilter, Gullfoss

How's the SiX work into your workflow? Also what are your opinions on the C1?

I use the SiX for tracking through mic inputs 1 and 2 through FB outputs and sum stereo synth, guitar, drums, and vocal back through the bus compressor and shave about a dB.

I also take it to live trio gigs and put the vocals on 1, kick on 2, and bass on the talkback mic 3, then guitar on 4.

The console 1 sounds pretty good but it’s limitation is on the Q setting. It only gets so narrow so you’ll need to use another EQ for surgery (and also air). The ease of use is where this thing kills it. It’s really easy to listen and make quick changes bouncing from channel to channel. Also parallel compression is nice if you’re into that. It’s also nice to sweep the drive character and boost on vocals, guitar, bass, kick, and snare.

I give the Silver Bullet, SiX, QU-16 and Console 1 9.9/10

10/10 is reserved for my Knaggs Choptank

1) my ART TubeOpto 8
2) my O.P.R 84 SDC Pair
3) my multiple custom made 8-balanced trs input D-SUB snakes

Without those snake cables, I’d be dead in the water.
