Found 2 DBX 163X in the basement at my job

I hooked them up to my Apollo in stereo just for fun and tried them on some different sources in a mix I'm working on, like drums and bass. I quite liked the results. Also tried it on the mix bus with just a touch of compression. It's a colorful compressor.

I've mostly been ITB and I'm doing mixes and recording mostly because I enjoy doing so. I have to say it's nice to be able to use some hardware, it's just more fun sometimes. I could surely see a use for these in the home/small studio.

The 163 is a minor league classic. This makes me want to hook mine back up again...

I ended up using it on the close mics on the drums, bass, backing vocals & acoustic guitars. I like the color it gives, and it's so simple to use. I'm really happy I found these

Why can’t this kind of thing ever happen to me? I’ve always wanted to do like those picker guys and stumble onto dusty audio gold. Or anything useable really. I like giving this stuff a life of use rather than neglect.

I know what you mean. I work at a youth center, we have a small stage, 4 rehearsal rooms, a small studio, art gallery, café etc. The dbx I found was probably used for live sound many years ago.

If you ever spot anything by dbx that says "Project 1" on it, and it's an EQ, then grab it.

Those are Bob Orbans. And they sound real good. Noticeably better than any EQ daw plugin I've used. It hangs with the big names.

I also found a multi, a patchbay and a bunch of trs 1/4 cables. I bought it all from my boss for a steal.

I love, love, love the 163x. I use mine for just a little bit of smoothing on guitar and bass. I had one on my pedalboard but I had to give it up because the board was so big.
