New studio monitors

I've had my M-Audio BX5 monitors for several years now and I think it's time for an upgrade. I know they are very low end monitors, so I'm looking for something more expensive and that will be better quality. My max budget is $900CAD for both and would prefer to buy new. Should I go for active or passive monitors? And does the size matter? Should I go with 5", 6", etc.?

I don't know much about new studio monitors so any suggestions would be a great help. I will be using these studio monitors for mixing obviously. My room is treated and I have a set of monitor isolation pads. I will be purchasing monitor stands as well.

If you could provide me with some suggestions and info, I would really appreciate it. I'd prefer to buy from Long & McQuade. Here is a link to all the monitors they have:

JBL LSR305 ($440CDN/pair) - I love mine! or the bigger 308 at $720CDN/pair.

The 305s do a great job, very clean, nice soundstage

Me, too

I second the vote for JBLs. I have the 305s, and I also have the matching subwoofer and they are really accurate for that price range and my studio needs. I play my mixes on four or five different systems before final mix down, but usually don't have to do much tweaking from the sounds I hear on the JBLs.

If you are looking for a true upgrade, I'd spend a little more and get the Focal Alpha 65s.

Thank you for all the advice and info everyone! Really appreciate it!

So right now, I'm considering these:

https://www.long-mcquade.com/20980/P...ce-Monitor.htm

Which of these would you recommend? What are the advantages of one over the other? Or are there any others I should consider? Looking at purchasing them from Long & McQuade:

Also, I'm in a relatively small room in my basement. It's more of a square size and I have some acoustic panels on the wall and at the corners. What monitor size would be the best? From what I understand, I shouldn't get something too big? Maybe 5", 6"?

Hi metal,
I suggest looking at Focal CMS 50 to 65, which are selling out right now and going to be replaced on market by Focal Shape. Either way Focal Alphas going to be great too. JBL LSR305 are more of a budget option I would say. There is not much else at this price point. I suggest looking at APS Klasik, Neumann KH120 and Eve Audio SC205. Great products, highly recommended in every part of the world.

Do yourself a favor and do not choose rokits or threeway Presonus system. Many people complain about bad translation of muddy budget KRKs and the build quality of Presonus three E44.

The JBL LSR305 always get votes for monitors on a budget. If you can stretch your budget, Neumann KH120 are stupendous!
