Here's a new song I just finished tracking for my upcoming album.
Warbler V on my vocals, Black CM-1 on acoustic instruments. Going into a Black Lion B173 preamp.
Still needs some rough edges polished up in the mix, but you get the idea.

Here's my sister singing to an instrumental version of My Cherie Amour by Stevie Wonder on the Warbler MKVI on Voicing 1. It was recorded in a room without any acoustic treatment, so it probably could be better, but it's the best I can do for now.

I couldn't resist adding a gentle touch of compression and reverb, but other than that it's completely unprocessed.

I know it's apples and oranges to compare a studio condenser mic to a cheap stage mic, but it's the only other mic we had access to, so we did a take on the Shure SM58 just for the heck of it. This is treated with the same compression and reverb.

Ahem... I think I know which one I prefer.

Just in case anyone missed it over at the main 3U Audio mic thread. GS member JoelFarr posted an extremely revealing shootout between the GZ 47 Fet V and the Pearlman T-1, which costs 3x as much as the GZ.

Does anyone have a comparison of the Warbler MKIID vs the GZ47Fet? That plus the GZ47Fet-v all on male vocal would be fantastic. I found the 47fet and 47fetV on female vocals. And I thought there was a sample with the 47fet on a reggae singer but I can't find it.
I just don't remember seeing and can't find one comparing the MKIID vs the 47fet. Especially on singing vocal.

This is a couple examples on the 3U Black Cm-1. I figured i'd post and share how the lowest level of these mics sit up in a mix. Im a fan so far. Im hoping to save up for a MKIV when i can save up some $.

Kinda open instrumental with some "singing" (Unique tracks panned left and rightaobut 60% ish with some b/g singing) and a clean (Very light dubs on highlighst) straighforward verse.

https://soundcloud.com/thomasbagnell...twas-cold-prod

This is a busier instrumental with some "singing" (unique tracks panned left and right about 40%ish with a very low dub highlight center channel) and a stacked ( incorporated dubs and some light trips) vocal on the verse.

Edit. If you have any questions about specific techniques used to get a clearer view of what is the "mic" and what is production i'd be happy to give more details.

Howdy,
Well my pair of Teal CM-1 mics arrived.
Sound clip below.

Unfortunately one is not working and just produces noise. It does not seem to be just a ground issue. But I'll see.

The other one did the same thing but then started working.

So after all the fiddling around I got things set up and ran through a few songs just to get some samples down.

So here's finger a picking sample of the teal CM-1 about 12" away pointed at the 12th fret on my 12 feet parlor (#2) and vocals using my active Ribbon. Sources going into my Focusrite 18i8 captured into garage band on my phone.
The guitar is fairly dry vocals I've added a touch of reverb and echo.

My wife was not well so I only had a little play time. So later I'll switch things and use the Teal on Vox and ribbon on guitar and see how that goes.

Anyway here's the sample.

I have a warbler MKIID in transit to use as well. A quick vocal check on the teal sounded pretty full and nice so I'm interested in having a play with it soon.

Yeah, do try the Teal on your voice, too.
It's sort of the "opposite" of the MKII.
Well, relatively or subtly speaking of course.

3u gz vs ISK 2b

Hey guys,

Anyone have any of the GZ mics and an ISK 2b?

I loved the ISK 2b vs the Warbler, but would love to hear it vs a GZ, the gz47fet if possible since I also love the samples I've heard.

It's clear to me that the gz mics have much more depth than the Warblers, which are more forward and present. I think they're all amazing mics and value.

Okay last night had a quick play using the Teal CM-1 as a vocal mic.

I didnt track very well so I had to add some compression.

So here's some info
3U Teal CM-1 vocals. No roll off, no pop filter. Mic placement roughly about 9" away hung from above and capsule at nose height and angled down at 30-40 degree.

Guitar is recorded with a Golden age MKIII ribbon null angled to my vocal source mic about 7" away, where the neck meets the body angled toward the upper bout and across the sound hole

Anyway I hope this is helpful to someone looking at the Teal mic for male vocal.

Thanks. I preferred the mics the other way around, i.e. the ribbon on your voice and the Teal on the guitar.
Well, strumming versus fingerpicking is apples to oranges really, but the vocal is more easily compared.

Now we'll have to wait for that Warbler MKII.

Here's a few other quick rough samples from last night. Please ignore my many mistakes I'm working on it.

Tried to pick songs characteristically different to see what the mic sounded like in each scenario.

Would love to get some feedback if this mic is a good vocal mic for me. If it is I might get a Warbler IVD (I think that's the closest warbler version of the CM-1 maybe it's the V?)as one of the teals is DOA and am waiting to return it.

Thinking I may forget stereo pair and have a couple vocal mics I can use and swap around using whatever one I'm not using on vocal for the guitar.

I've been disappointed in the amount of mic bleed into the guitar mic from my vocal and am very happy with the 8 pattern but maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. Just figure having pattern selection on one guitar mic might outweigh having fixed pattern stereo pair especially if it's a nice alternate vocal mic.

Anyway here's the samples.
Recorded straight to garage band as a single track on my phone, added slight compression to lower some peak and added reverb but there no room effect on. The guitar is run through my DI and not miced. So no mixing tracks or EQ done.

The Teal CM-1 sounds better than it has a right to. It's fast, clean and hifi. Esses sound precise, too.
But IMO it's not the best match for your voice and style. Through cans (if used while recording) it probably sounds great as it complements the mid resonances in your head, on both ends of the spectrum.

Figure of eight can be a good solution for the singer-plus-acoustic-guitar setup. Nine inches to the mouth isn't really close, but could be necessary if you want to get the angle (null) right. So there's a chance you'll throw out the baby with the bathwater. On the guitar the distance in that setup might even be more. You need a good room for that. Add to that the sensitive back lobes in figure eight. Again, room gets more important.

Similarly, I'd be careful with a stereo setup on the guitar (for "live tracking"). You might add more problems than you need. The pros of your small guitar are that it's very focused and it's light on the bass. I'd take advantage of that. That is, come in relatively close with a cardioid (or figure eight) on the neck-to-body joint.
You could try to subtly add some soundboard sound by using the pickup. I'm sort of a purist, so I'm not sure if I would go there myself. But it never hurts to try. And panned it will add some broadness for sure.

BTW, bleed can be your friend.
Not if you want to erase afterwards, though.

Before you make any further decision regarding new microphones, I'd wait until you've tried the MKII.

The vocal sounds great - didn't expect the CM-1 to sound that good. All the details in the vocal are captured perfect. However personally for that style of music I'd prefer a darker more vintage sounding mic like the MKII, FET47V or Tube 47. That would be the next logical step up imho.

Well my MKIID was at the post even though tracking said it was in customs.
So I quickly set it up as only had time to take a quick stab at some of the songs I did with the Teal CM-1

It's not a direct compare, having not done the mics at the same time etc. I set the MKIID the same as I had the teal. I also just quickly put the settings on garage band about where they were for the CM-1.

At any rate hopefully it sheds light.

Any comparison available GZ251 vs Warbler VI ?

Perhaps MYN will see this - Hey guy, you turned me on to the 3U stuff and i'm liking the Warbler VI and GZ47 for my VOs ... but i know you're really feeling like the 251 is killer -- just wondered if you or anybody has posted some A/B samples between 251 and other 3u just for some idea of what to expect...
I'm really impressed with the GZ47 ...and as far as Warbler VI - love the U87ai-similar setting - paired with a great Pre, it's awesome

BTW am gonna be testing a Kiwi vs my other stuff including the 3U... will try to put something up in the way of a quick demo comparison ...

Saw your thumbs up for the N72 Pre btw - sounds like a winner - I've been really happy w/ Great River (mostly) and LA610 w/ a 416 - always a solid 'go-to' VO combo.. just curious as far as the N72 price range..ever had any experience with the Warm stuff (Tonebeast) or GAP Pre73? Yeah i know they're oft-considered low end but have been impressed by them in the past too.

Best,

Mike

Duuude. I vaguely recall that KidVybes may have posted a "GZ251 vs..." type file a while back but my memory is not what it used to be. I currently have a GZ251 and a GZ67 so if I remember, I'll try to cut some kind of quick comparison during my warmups tomorrow if that helps.

I've heard some very nice things about the Kiwi and the B6 capsule in that, I believe, is modeled after a 251-style voicing so I'm very curious to hear what it sounds like, especially in a mic without a transformer. That'd be cool to hear what it sounds like in a VO context.

And yes, absolutely loving the ever-loving crap out of the N72. Long story short, I acquired an Apollo Twin and discovered that my GZ251 through their Unison Neve 1073 was a sound I loved, but the UAD Neve's articulation wasn't where I preferred because on my voice I could sense a bit of lower-mid smearing, which of course for VO is not optimal. The N72 gives me all that 1073 mojo I dug, but has better articulation, more bottom end and a slightly brighter tone. The GZ251 leans dark-ish as it is so, I'm very pleased with the N72. I am sorry to say I've never had the pleasure of using a Tonebeast or the GAP 73.

heard lots of praise for the GAP 73, but in the end, heard more for the N72. I had been looking at the Zen Pro modded GAP 73, but decided I preferred the idea of a unit that had been originally designed and built with the Carnhills and tantalum caps as opposed to one that had been modded to that level, but that's just me. I cut a trailer through the N72 on Friday (with a 416) and the producers were extremely happy with final product. I thought the tone absolutely killed. I felt the N72 put some nice purr into my resonant frequencies in a very musical way.

But back to our regularly scheduled programming... When I cut that 251v67 comparison, I'll post it here in this thread.

I had a pair of Pre73's for some time. They're cool for the money but I do not believe they're in the same league as the N72. I have a Heritage DMA73 now which I would put in the same class as the N72, quality wise, and I can tell you it's decisively on a different level than the GAP's.

I still have a pair of Warm WA12s (Tonebeasts with fewer options) and they're great. Very different flavor than any of the Neve style stuff. I love them on drums.

Guys, have you checked page 1 of this very thread?
Kidvybes put a list there (post #4 ).
There's an A/B between the 251 and IV right there.
VO no less.

And for those whom it may concern, there are samples of the GZ251 on its own.
One is right above the A/B.
And it's on various sources near the bottom of the same list.
Not to mention the video clip of suniil's daughter singing.
That was on page 2 and it's quoted at the top of the page we're on now (scroll up).

Cheers.
