AMI ORIENT LLC MICROPHONES?

Has anyone heard, heard of or used these mics?

http://www.ami-orient.com/home.html

The poor buggers aren't too well-versed in the English language.
Hopefully, they make much better microphones.
At these prices, it might be worth a try.
A 30 day money-back guarantee?

Their sales office is located in Vancouver, B.C. Canada.
I found them through one of their EBAY auctions.

Those arent going to sound any different than others that come from the 737 factory, or whatever its called, at around 2-300 bux. It is a good price, thaTS for sure.

If you have enough money, they will make you a bundle of mics, and put any name on it that you want.. being that its China, you could call your mics "Neumanns", and they wouldnt care!!heh

I got a pair of L11S for about 100$
they are the same mic,( if you look at the pic and spec ) as the
Jos meek JM27 and the ADK SC-1......
i use them as OH'S. i was not crazy about the tone, it's ok, but not more.
But i didn't expect much more for 100 $ a pair..........

Dave Thomas from Advanced Audio recomends:

"Hi Craig, they are just another Chinese microphone with a fixed cardiod
ALCTRON (460 type single-sided) 3-micron capsule.

It will sound like a 460 in Cardiod but has a better shock-mount.

They can be upgraded with a Peluso capsule for $145 CDN.

It would be $89 to upgrade the tube and electronics to improve the headroom.

You are better off to buy a NADY TCM-1050 on e-bay from Gary Gear for $209 and
have the same great shock-mount but have 9-polar patterns.

The TCM-1050 will stand up to a real Telefunken U47 once you have a Peluso
capsule fitted, have the circuit upgraded and add the BV-8 custom
transformer. We charge $495 CDN to upgrade the TCM-1050 into a Tele U47
tube microphone."

Cheers, Dave

wouldn't it be better to throw another 300-400 on top and get a ready made Peluso 22 47?
just a thought...

cheers,

It might be.
My "DAVE THOMAS" modded APEX 460s sound pretty great.
As does the APEX 415 he also modded for me.

Great for you and Dave! , but I hope noone believes this statement literally

" We charge $495 CDN to upgrade the TCM-1050 into a Tele U47
tube microphone."" granted as always YMMV.

That said I'am sure the upgrade is a "large-time" (chinese accent) improvement!

He meant a mic that it would be
similar-sounding to a U47.
I have heard a U47 that sound less than stellar before.
I have also heard a couple that sounded great.

Not every high priced mic, especially older-used models will automatically sound wonderful.
Indeed sometimes in life you get what you pay for.
And other times you pay for what you get.

Would I actually expect any cheap Chinese mic to sound like a real Neuman or Telefunken mic in brand new or a used model in great condition?
Of course not.

I have also heard so lesser sounding real U87s.
While others sound awesome.

Age of the mic, it's abuse or non-abuse and people who take great care of their gear can make a huge difference in how any mic will sound.
I don't have the money to buy a new U47 or U87.
I'd love to have a pair of both of those mics.Used of course, that are in great working order.

Right now I'll have to live with modded versions of Chinese mics, with up-graded components.

Not everyone has 20k or more to blow on 4 mics.

stock vs. modded 415?

Hey roxxon, What mods did Dave Thomas do to your Apex 415 and what is the difference between the stock and modded 415? Dave has a mic of mine he's modded, it's a Stellar mic same as the Apex 460. I'm waiting for him to ship to me. He seems to be a bit slow at shipping. Thanks, Don

Hi Don,

Dave did a capasitor and capsule upgrade on my APEX 415.
It sounds much richer and less harsh than the stock model.
The modded 415s sound a lot better.
But then again, they cost a lot more money
I live in Vancouver so I have never had an issue with his delivery time.
He drops them off at my house.
He's a very cool guy!

Thanks roxxon

Thanks for the reply roxxon. When I get my modded mic from Dave I'll decide weather to get another mod from him or just get an SM7.

The Apex 460 mods sound great.
I have two of them and a stock 460.
There is no comparison.
The mods are much warmer and smoother sounding.
I'm going to have Dave mod my two NADY 1150s as well.
They sound a tad better stock than the Apex 460s.
The NADYs are basically the same mic with a different tube (the stock models).

Henchman and I are lucky.
Dave just lives a few miles away from both of us, just outside Vancouver city in British Columbia, Canada.

I would seriously also consider buying a SM7 in the future.
You do need a decent pre-amp that with 60 dB gain, in order to use the SM7 to it's maximum potential.
