fwiw I'm using Rode NT1000s overheads on Zildjian Custom A cymbals - customers are always happy with the result.

I think a big part of your problem has been your mics. The ATM450 is a pretty clean sounding mic. I believe the low end is cut a bit, and the high end is boosted a bit, so that might be exactly what you're looking for. (Still not as clear as a $350 PZM, but you may not want to drop $700 on a pair. Maybe buy one, with a store return option. You could always us it as a mono room mic and really set your sound on fire.)
