Talking Vocal Pre for live shows

Hey i am recently the permanent live engineer for a great up and coming act called Civil Twilight.
Now the vocalist is good but he has a pretty sharp voice, kind of a similar tone to Thom York (but only if i have to compare).
I am looking for a not to expensive mic pre and/or compressor to help smooth it out. Has anyone got suggestions?

Has anybody used any of Malcolm Toft's compressors. What you think?

Re. mic pre for live shows

Check out the Safe Sound Audio PI. www.safesoundaudio.com I used one many times with a problem vocalist. It has a built-in compressor and a limiter.

I work a lot with a thin sounding female singer, and my secret weapon is the SPL Track One.
Decent pre, excellent comp, deseser and EQ!

I just added a RNP and RNC to my rack and love them. I ran an insert into the RNC for channel 1 on the RNP and have had nothing but good times. Plenty of headroom and the SuperNice mode keeps things in check without being obvious.

I have a second RNC that I use on the Vox sub for the other vocals. I am now shopping for a second RNP so I will have 4 channels of good clean power.

Here's what I'm working with:
home sweet booth

Found both in a Funk Logic rack for 500 on ebay.

Use a better board and use a BSS DPR901.

Personally I'm horny for purple a rack with a pants, odd, and action. This would be kick ass live stuff. I realize I've never heard any of these products, but the price is so right. Passive eq's are awesome live, but most importnatly I want a mic pre with two outputs ( as supported by the prurple rack) this way when I walk into a gig without a separate monitor guy, I can split the vocals into two strips: one for monitors one for FOH. This is the ultimate freedom. There is nothing worse than compromsing FOH vocals because of monitors and vice versa. And as for the action compressor, I'm so sick of the dbx sound I could hurl.

cheers
