...everyone. FWIW, adding autogain on a compressor with a known (and fixed) ratio is INFINITELY easier to do. (side note: ubk-1 does not have fixed ratios, it has S-curves where the ratio changes the way vari-mu's do, which is why autogain there is as challenging and imperfect as it is with distortion.) If you've made...
...everyone else, don't be afraid to use it on everything, that's what I do! Well, I still use the UBK-1 on about 20% of things because it just blows things up like nothing else. Gregory Scott - ubk
...Tapehead. A few that come to mind, that I've used for that sort of thickening drive: Airwindows Density PlugNMix Analoger (tape mode) UBK-1 (just the saturation) Nomad Factory Magnetic II (the tape drive)
I bought the UBK-1 the day it was officially released. Being the proud owner of a UBK Fatso, I couldn't resist to see what Greg did ITB.
I'm glad I jumped on board, this is one of the most colorful and interesting sounding plugins I've heard. Well, not probably, it IS.
I'm a little hesitant to...
This will be quick.
Sounds freekin' great. There is a wide range of adjustment inside this puppy. I can't stop using it. 10
Extremely easy to use. Truly leaves the decisions up to your ears, as I like it. Not too many ways to tweak it but huge range of adjustment nonetheless. 10
A friend of mine asked me for my thoughts on this little plugin and I'd never heard of it. After checking out the video demo online I thought I'd give it a try.
It's worth mentioning that the demo requires iLok registration so you'll have to grab a key if you want to check this one out!
The UBK-1 is a three-stage dynamics processor with simultaneous serial and parallel audio paths that open up unprecedented levels of control over a sound's shape, tone, and harmonic character. The processor has three engines - Saturation, Compression, and Density. Five meticulously tweaked compressor curves are provided, all based on the popular UBK FATSO hardware. A high pass (HP) sidechain filter with an unusually wide frequency sweep allows for unorthodox shapes of compression. Two "Tele" style rockers control the wet/dry Mixes, and feature several optimized preset positions as well as fully variable operation. A Headroom control simultaneously adjusts the sidechain level of all three engines without affecting the plugin's output level. At the end of the chain, the Density engine adds an additional frequency-selective compressor/harmonic saturator, with a switch for targeting the mids or highs. The cumulative effect of these three engines is a thickness and musicality typically associated with expensive analog processing.
