How to: iPad as MIDI editor/librarian?

I'm thinking about putting an old iPad mini (16GB/1st. generation, iOS 9.3.5) to use as a dedicated MIDI librarian/editor -what do I need for this, and how well would it work?

It'll be used with various 80's/90's hardware synths (Yamaha DX-7, TX-802, TX-81z, Roland D-110, MKS-70, JX-8P, MKS-50, Studio Electronics SE-1). A Roland A-880 8x8 MIDI patchbay in the midst of my setup should probably make it easy to integrate it with the rest of my setup.

I've already purchased Apple's "Lightning to USB3 camera adapter" which I understand I need for this, but I'm having trouble finding just a MIDI interface as all interfaces appear to be audio or audio+MIDI which I don't think I need (if the price difference isn't that big I see it it could perhaps come in handy if I was to bring my iPad on the road at some stage enabling me to record ideas). Suggestions?

How about software on the iPad (and for backing up on the Mac -see below)?

And once having my synth patches transferred over to the iPad, is there any software I could use on my Mac to back up those same patches without too much hassle and complications? Either dumping the sysex files over to the Mac or transferring them into a similar compatible librarian as on the iPad I suppose.
