tascam 38 and TSR-8 fun

Hello,
I am an amateur recorder doing acoustic originals.
I am working presently with my trusty (somewhat after replacing the logic board) tascam 38 which I am using a teac m-50 board with.
I am running into some problems doing overdubs, the intial recordings are straightforward. I have both manuals but am still running into a brick wall with the overdubs.HELP!
I also have a TSR-8 that needs recording heads, any ideas, are they the same as the tsr-8?

I started on an M50/80-8 combo. Still have the deck which I want to restore. What seems to be the problem with overdubs?
