Sound City Studios – Rebirth of a Legend

We're pleased to officially announce the return of Sound City Studios! Thanks to a newfound partnership between Sandy Skeeter, owner of the Sound City complex, and Olivier Chastan, a veteran music industry executive, the studio will be available to the general public again for the first time since 2011.

As many of you know from the documentary, Dave Grohl purchased the famed Neve 8028 console from studio A. The building itself however, remained in the possession of the Skeeter family, who leased the location to Fairfax Recording, which operated exclusively as a private recording studio. Studio A is now centered around an extraordinarily rare and fully restored Helios Type 69 console. Those that are familiar with the history of Helios, know that these consoles are responsible for making some of the greatest rock recordings of the late 1960's through 1970's and beyond.

Sound City now has the distinction of being the only studio on earth (that we know of) to have not one, but two Helios Type 69 consoles. Studio B now plays home to the only known Helios Type 69 line mixer, which was originally installed at Island Studios in 1969 and used to mix seminal records by acts such as: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, and many others.

Through the use of machines such as our 3M M79 16-track and 2-track, Ampex MM1000 16-track, and Studer A800 24-track, we plan to continue the tradition of analog recording, while also offering our clients the flexibility of a Pro Tools HD system in each room. Pro Tools can easily be synced to each tape machine, for even greater flexibility with hybrid productions.

We're excited not only to offer tracking and mixing to clients on-site, but remote track processing as well, for our clients who would like to harness some of the capabilities of the studio for their own recordings, but don't necessarily want to commit to booking a full day in the studio.

We are happy to answer any questions that you may have about the studio and look forward to posting regularly on the studios behalf around the Gearslutz forum!

Did they get rid of that Helios console that Henry Hirsch used to own? I thought I saw that Soundtoys bought it but I could be wrong. Anyone know what they replaced it with?
