I was mentioning earlier about the Tomatometer being a bad way to gauge a film, and I think The Children is proof of that. I'm generally not a fan of the "killer kids" genre of horror films, but I gave this one a shot because it's got a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's just irresponsible adults and reprehensible children killing each other. When it was over, I had to get on Wiki to check the plot because I was certain I must have fallen asleep and missed something. Nope. No reason. No story. Just killer kids and bad parenting. Some virus causing it is implied, but never explored. This movie was truly pointless.

Pretty not great in my opinion. I'd say on par with Skyline, both worse than Battle LA.
Is that even possible? Nothing is worse than Battle: LA. That was one pointless movie. Skyline wasn't bad, it just wasn't memorable. Cool ending, but not worth enduring the rest of the movie for. I'd say Extinction was more than a little better than these two.

Extinction had a twist, but that was about it. There wasn't really much character development or anything at all to latch onto that made me invested in it. And the ending was pretty unsatisfying. At least in Battle: LA the writers made the protagonist at least somewhat relatable and human (cough) in that he was an older dude on the verge of retirement.

Also, I hate films where most is taking place in dark confined spaces like corridors and bunkers etc. It all just reeks of "let's save money on vfx by keeping things dark and or indoors". Battle: LA had better visuals I thought.

At the end of of Battle: LA I was like, ok, not a great movie. At the end of Extinction I was like, ok, why did I waste my time on that.

Skyline was fairly crappy as well. I think Eckhart is a million miles better an actor than the lead of Skyline. Pena is good but that role wasn't great.

So I really think Extinction and Skyline are roughly on par, and Battle LA is less crappy.

I found this on a list of remakes that were better than the original. I hadn't seen the original, but am a George Romero fan, so I watched both versions of The Crazies back to back. I'm reviewing them simultaneously because they're really not drastically different from one another. A small town gets hit by a weaponized virus that makes people go on killing sprees, and the military steps in to try and clean it up. Chaos ensues. They've both got their political undertones, but Romero is more blatant about it in his version. In fact, the ending harkens to the way Night of the Living Dead ended. The remake's ending is different, but still satisfying. I think the biggest difference is in the way the characters are portrayed. In Romero's version, the main characters aren't very deeply fleshed out, but their personalities are allowed to shine, so you do grow attached to them and care about what happens. In the remake, their stories have a light shined on them, but they're "stronger" characters in that they make better and more rational decisions. Altogether, they're both great movies, and it's hard to pick a favorite because they kinda complement each other more than they contradict each other.

Some of those foreign films can be quite good. I watched the trailer this afternoon.

I'll give you that. On reflection, I think I like the concept of the movie more than the execution. Imagining that these guys are people you really cared about, and then the big reveal? That could have been emotionally devastating if done right. So yeah, I get you. Totally a missed opportunity there.

They all suck.

The end.

Seriously, they do, I don't even bother trying anymore 100% GARBAGE.

Who would have thought in 2015, the year I got to see MAD MAX: Fury Road, and PACIFIC RIM, two movies that make my top 5 all-time list (Fury Road is #1 , It beat out Star Wars for the best movie ever made in my book, that movie is as good as movies get) that one talentless hack would have destroyed both Star Wars and Star Trek though some of the most inane storytelling I've ever endured (Actually, it wasn't storytelling, that's the problem, or you could say it was Transformers storytelling)

"Transformers" was really the sign of the apocalypse, that people actually paid to see movies that insulting to the intelligence spelled the end for us all.

Sorry, TWO talentless hacks destroyed Star Wars.....or maybe it WAS one, because I'm pretty sure Ryan Johnston knew EXACTLY what he was doing.

Jar Jar Abrahms is so awful he honestly doesn't know he's bad. It's like he's color blind to good storytelling.

But you rate 'MAD MAX fury road' as "the best movie ever made"?

Thank you!!!

I think most of the blame should be placed on Kathleen Kennedy. She's the one who hired Jar Jar which set a terrible precedent for Rian to follow. And boy did he deliver on following up on that awful path. The final film in the trilogy was a glorious conclusion. I actually didn't think it could be so awful yet different from the previous two. It's like all three have their spots reserved in hell but for different reasons. It's weird yet logical.

I hate the SW sequels so, so much.

Another one from the list of remakes that were better than the original, so I watched these back to back:

So the 1958 version of The Blob is a prime example of 1950's sci-fi cheese. It's so conservative that it's borderline wholesome. Only one person dies, and the street gangs are a bunch of nice people that go around helping others that are in need. It's not a bad movie, it's just not good, either. Even Steve McQueen couldn't save it. There's nothing about it that really stands out compared to other movies of its kind, so I don't really know why this was chosen to do a remake.

...and then there's this prick. The 1988 version of The Blob is actually really f**ked up. If you're into gore, you'll love this. If not, then stay the hell away. Like the 1950's version, it's not bad, but it's not good. Only this one stands out because the killing and bodily mutilations are just over the top. I'm honestly surprised you don't hear this one coming up in reference to classic gory movies. I don't think I'm that squeamish, but this irritating bastard made me cringe through almost the whole thing. Fantastic special effects no doubt, but my god, the death scenes are just obscene. Unless you're a sick pervert, skip this one.

Oh yeah, that's right! I forgot that was also based on a pet cheesy movie from the 50's.

I showed that movie to my wife a couple years ago, and she was feeling bad for the dog being chased in the beginning. Oh boy, was she surprised!

So I watched Marriage Story for the dumbest reason...

I know that video is silly, but when I was watching it, I noticed that beneath the silly dubbing was a pair of people that were putting on a compelling performance, and I wanted to see more. Joaquin Phoenix was speaking during his SAG award acceptance that Adam Driver deserved it more than he did, so that just piqued my interest even more.

So yeah, Marriage Story is about a couple getting divorced and going through the last stages of their marriage. They're both kind of selfish, but both very passionate, so though they're struggling to be civil, it gets explosive (as shown in the clip.) It's emotionally ravaging because they're both very well-fleshed characters going through the hardest part of any relationship. It's a tear jerker, so I approve.

Jeez, it just reminded me of this movie... Except they didn't get a divorce at the end.

Yeah, they nailed this one and made up for my disappointment in GITS. Rose is in a really cool series on Amazon Prime called Undone. Loving the first 5 episodes of that one.

Here for the gear

The last movie I watched was A Cure for Wellness. It started out alright but then got weird, and weirder, and weirder still.

It's about this man who's in legal trouble in his company and has to go on a quest to find his boss, who's in a retreat in Switzerland. Everyone at this retreat has a mystery disease that only the retreat can cure. There's incest, creepy crawlies, and attempted rape. I kind of wanted to stop watching it midway through.
