What's in your mic locker? Condenser Microphones

What's in your mic locker?

Just beeing curious here. For the usual posts, seems you'd be almost done with some U47s/clone, some sm57s for guitars/drums and some condenser for overheads. Are you all devoted to rock/hard/metal here?

Does anyone also have, say, a pair of good SD omnis, or a few ribbons (out of the 121 for miking cabs), or a matched pair of non-strictly voice LD condensers like TLM-170s, MKH800s, M150s.. etc, etc

I know Michael Wagener is a total mic slutz, but he doesn't have many SD mics for instance (Schoeps, dpa, Gefells..). Guess you don't need them for hard rock, isn't it?

Also, does your total investment in outboard gear (DAW and FXs excluded) surpass that in mics?

A BIG lock, a german shephed attack dog, and a sign-out sheet

Oh....IN my locker?

Well. Those of us who do remote and location work, symphony or string sessions as well as R&B, jazz, or classical recording instead of heavy metal (not that we don't LOVE to ROCK!) carry many matched pairs of SDCs. Personally, I have about 14 pairs of SDC omni matched pairs and probably only 8 matched pairs of SDC cardioids, but I also have a bunch (probably seven) 451s, three SM81s, and three KM85s that I dont consider matched.

Matched pairs of LDCs too...four or five of them right now(awaiting pending sale on the fifth pair, have not been using them) various types & vintages, plus a couple of serious mics for vocal and kick...as to be expected.

Only one pair of matched ribbons and two different single ribbon mics from different manufacturers...

about 60 dynamics from various manufacturers, in the USA and abroad.

Mine is a small mic cabinet comared to the studios I like to work in.

Does that help?

1 x Sennheiser MKH 80
1 x Sennheiser MKH 50
3 x Sennheiser MKH 40
2 x Neumann KM 131 (free-field omni, AB pair)
1 x Neumann KM 140
3 x Beyerdynamic MCD 100 (first generation digital mic)
3 x Beyerdynamic MC 803
3 x Beyerdynamic MC 805
4 x Beyerdynamic MC 801
2 x Beyerdynamic MC 723
1 x Beyerdynamic MC 716 (shotgun)
2 x AKG C 460 (modified by Jim Williams) / CK 62 ULS DF
2 x AKG C 480 / CK 61 with nice extension tubes for the capsules...
2 x AKG C 460 / CK 63
4 x AKG C 414; 1 EB P48, 1 B-ULS, 2 B-TL (not TL II), great pair
2 x AKG C 451 / CK 3
1 x Audix M1290HC Micromic
1 x MBHO MBC 410
1 x MXL V77 (my sole tube mic... Not bad...)
1 x MXL 2003
2 x BPM CR-4 N

Not used in recordings, but available for rare PA purposes:
2 x Beyer M 201
1 x Shure SM 57
1 x Shure SM 94
1 x Beyerdynamic M300
3 x BPM CR-79
1 x MXL 2001

I don't really need the one esoteric supermic... I just need a number of good solid high-quality "workhorses".

Good point... I definitely need more pairs. But even unmatched pairs will do just fine often enough (not as main pair, of course).

Michael's impressive list shows how different mic collections are according to their owner's individual needs... I would have a hard time picking mics for a larger classical recording session out of this collection... Hardly any stereo pairs, hardly any SDC omnis, except the Neumann head...

Don't really do a lot of those classical recording sessions heh but I agree with tailoring your mic locker to the type of music you do. There are a whole bunch of mics on my wish list, though, and there always will be

What's IN my mic locker!

I’m a synthesizer/keyboard player and singer who also records the occasional drum session, opera, vocal/rap overdubs, audio for video production, Classical duet, or whatever else needs to be recorded or live-sound reinforced!

I like being able to choose the right mics to get the right color for a recording/production, rather than relying on EQ. It starts from the source, folks! I also like having a mix of dynamics, condensers, vintage, and eclectic mics.

Current Selection:
AKG C452EB x2 with CK-1 capsules (nearly matched)
AKG D200E x2
Audio Technica 4033 CL
B&K NASA Test Mic (rocket exhaust measurement mic)
Beyer M422 (n/c)
Crown PZM-30FS (with active supply and passive transformer)
EV 257B (talkback, scratch; non-keeper vocals; prop for restless vocalists—sometimes me)!
EV 635
EV RE85 Lav
EV RE1000
Gefell PM750 (requires T-power)
Josephson C42’s Matched Pair
Numark STD-272
Sennheiser MD214 Lav
Shure SM57
3 modded SM57 heads (no transformer)
Shure 545S x2
Shure 556S
Sony C74 Shotgun

Next up:
RE20
ATM-25
Audix D6
Avenson Sto-2’s Matched Pair
AT 4047’s x2
Beyer M201
Blue/Red/Whatever Lollipop Heads for C452’s
E609 Silver
More SM-57’s
Copperphone

As for the ratio of mics to outboard:

$3600 on Mics, $4100 on Outboard = pluggins, compressors, traditional multi-FX, mixers with EQ.

So, about 50/50 on the Mics to Outboard cost ratio.

But, the 35 module MOTM/Blacet FX/synthesizer modular [$8000] offsets that cost ratio considerably!

Last edited by John Nonjohn; 16th November 2006 at 09:09 PM.. Reason: Added cost ratio of mics to outboard.

Here my current collection...I found that if i make all of them visible in my mic locker I don't forget about any of them. I mean when I listen to an instument, say a certain guitar, then go to the mic locker, I have them all in front of me and sometimes one jumps out at me as something cool to try, that I might not have thgought of if it was burried in its box in the back.

Close to perfect, once he adds the Elam 251, two Neumann U67s, two Neumann M50s, a Beyer M88, two DPA 4041 LDCs, two DPA 4006 SDC omnis, two Schoeps CMC5 with MK2, MK2s, MK4 and MK41 capsules (2 each)... oh, never mind. Great mics, Bongo.

Once I saw Allen Sides' mic locker, I figured why bother...just keep what you need.

Here for the gear

Neumann U47 Tube (VF14, reskinned M7, big Transformer, custom PSU)
Neumann U48 Tube (Nuvistor, reskinned K47, custom PSU)
2x Neumann M49c (matched Pair, reskinned K47, custom PSU)
Neumann U87 (old version)
Sony C800g with Telefunken tube
2x Neumann CMV563 with M7 and M55K capsules (reskinned & matched)
2x Gefell MV692 with M94 capsule, modded (sounds pretty much like a KM54)
2x Gefell MV692 with M70 capsule, modded (prefer it to a KM84)
The modded Gefells are virtually noiseless, have a much higher headroom than before and sound almost like tube bodies.
2x Sennheiser 421 (70s)
2x Sure SM57

I mainly do R'n'B and Pop, for full band productions I rent a bigger studio so I only have a small but nice collection.
Would love to add some Royers, U67 and a C12.
