Piecing Together An Ampex 351 Tape Machine

I have a basic question that I haven't really found a concrete answer for. I've searched through older posts and poured over the ampex mailing list content. I know there are varying opinions on these machines and what people want from them. Of course, many Ampex 351's have been taken apart because of the interest to use the electronics as mic preamps. But I'm looking for a complete 351 tape machine. And they seem to be difficult to find nowadays.

Basically, I want to take 351 preamps that have been ripped out of other machines and piece them back into a tape machine.

I just want to know what to look for in terms of master/slave units and all that. And if there a way to use the 351 electronics with a better transport than the stock one?
