Recommend good dynamic mic

I am shopping for a good dynamic mic to add to my mic collection.
I am considering the Sennheiser MD421, Heil Pr30, Re20, new Neuman as well as others.
I am looking for a good general all around mic (guitar, guitar amp, voice), which I could also use for guitar amplifiers, and guitar instrument (yes I own a SM57).
I would appreciate your opinions on this subject.
Yours,
ES

Do a search on the Heil PR30 and PR40. They are well worth taking a look. Notice who is using them and comments.

I'd take the Audix i5 over lots of stuff for a smooth sounding dynamic with good presence and full low / low mids. Crazy what that mic can do well.

The Heil stuff is fairly bright for a dynamic, which fills a need there nicely as well. Almost condensor like in many ways. The PR40 takes the cake there.

The E/V ND468 is a nice tight patterned dynamic with a good bite to the top end, I really like on guitar cabs when sonic real estate is too tight for the big fat sound of a ribbon. It's very proximity dependent, so you can cram it right into the speaker (or up on the vocalist) without a big boomy sound unless it's right on top of the source.

The new 421 II models sound different than the old 421's so don't base your purchase on hearing an old one. The new models have a boost around 3k that can work well on kick drums etc, they share a similar mid and low response though.

Beyer M201. I love this mic and it's great on all kind of things like acoustic guitars, snare, toms and the odd guitar amp.

Hey,

I listened to Warren in another thread and tried the Audix i5 ($99). I LOVE this mic. Sounds great on my voice, and on guitar cab too! An excellent example that cost doesn't equal quality.

For $100 how can you go wrong? It's everything I thought a sm57 was supposed to be but smoother, and just plain better-er.

BTW, I own the RE20, a md421 , sm57, sm58 dynamic mics. Right now I prefer the Audix on all sources I record (guitar amp and my voice).

i5

Thank you all for your resonses.
Is the i5 a dynamic, or a condenser which sounds like the "ideal dynamic" should?
I called Heil, actually spoke to Bob Heil! who recommended the pr30 for my application (specifically guitar cabs).
How would you describe the i5?

The Heil Pr 40 and 30 may both be good choices.

why no loving for the Re-27?

Here for the gear

I'm a big fan of the Heil PR30 and PR40. I've had great results with them on toms, snares. I've also used the 30 on guitar cabs and the 40 on bass cabs. They're definitely a little brighter than your garden variety dynamic like a 421 or sm7.

I've tried the pr40 on the kick a couple times, and i'm still trying to find a good tone with it in that application. Admittedly, i'm on a sm7 kick for micing kicks...

Heil seems like a great company and i'm pretty happy to support them.

Is the 88TG the same sound as the original 88?

I'd be going with the Shure SM7b (vocals,guitars) & Audix i5 (guitars,snare).

Heard great things about the two above mentioned beyers, i'm gonna pick them up myself.

I have the PR-20, PR-30 and the I-5. For an all-arounder you can't go wrong with the I-5 or the PR-30. It's cool that you actually got to talk to Bob Heil and not someone else. I'd probably go with the PR-30. It's also a phenominal floor tom mic. The PR-20 is a cool mic on snare. Lately I've been using the PR-20 on top and an Audio Technica ATM450 on bottom. Best snare sound yet.

SM7 awesome on vocals. Sounds good on guitar amp too.
Beyer m201. cool for snare and lots of other things. Really cool tone for a dynamic.
Md421, the beige ones ( is that the name of that color? I'm not sure ) I like this one on kick and guitar amps.

I love the SM7B and the MD421's. Don't care for the RE20 though, not after owning an SM7 and an MD421. The RE20's just too damn muffled and dark. Might work for american mono radio or so but it's definitely not my cup of tea.

Wow

Many thanks to all for your suggestions. I wish I had the $ to pursue them all!
I ordered a Heil Pr30 because Bob Heil told me it was great.
I may consider some of your other suggestions in the future.
Is it possible that you try to convey to me in words what I good dynamic mic does for your recording or sound, which other mic types do less well?
Thank you all so much for your responses.
Yours,
ES

every studio should have a M201
The Audix I5 is a cool modern dynamic too.

I dont know the Heils but there is lots of good buzz on them in the forums.
Worth a check-out.

In short - the known classics are;

Sennheiser 421 & 441
Shure SM7(b)
EV RE-20 (& its relations)
Beyer 88

Also consider the AKG 300 series (310, 321 & 330 etc)
and there are some other Beyers & Audio Technicas that are worth hearing too.

But the Sennheiser 441 gets my vote for all round best dynamic ever made.
I've even seen footage of ABBA singing into them live!

a nother-one here for Shure SM7. if you use a preamp/eq with some balls/color you can do even more, as it is a very smooth mic. We have been useing them here at the radio station in production as well as On-Air for 10+ years.

Kick, Vox, Stand-up, Try it on horns too!.

My only whine, is that dam yoke of their's and the way it sits on the spring loaded Boom arms in Broadcast rooms. OK for standard mic stand but not for broadcast because the announcers always like to turn-em up side down, because you can get your voice to go lower if your looking down.

Anyway all of the mics mentioned are very good too.

Electrovoice re16 can be found for no money and they shine on vocals.
I used it even on snare or guitar cab.
