So, does this classify as a Neve-alike?

"The N72 recreates the Neve B183 amplifier module used in the 1272 and 1073....."

Be wary. Most of these shortcuts/ too good to be true 'deals', are in fact just that. I'm heard 2 of the so called neve kits (not this one), and they both sucked.

I just got these comments on the N72 yesterday from a prospective dealer. He seems to like it.

"...we ran it through the mill. It sounds wonderfully close (really close!) to our Brent Averills. We tracked everything we could through it directly into Protools. Guitars, vocals, percussion, bass and it all sounded great. All agreed that it sits nicely in the Neve family. So now we know that the sound is right..."

This guy was reviewing an assembled unit, but if you're willing and able to do some assembly work yourself, you can achieve the same results with an N72 kit. I've tried to provide a lot of kit options, and the more work you do yourself, the more you can save. Just FYI, in case you're attracted to the low price of a "minimal kit", keep in mind that collecting the components is also a lot of work, and very time consuming.

Overall, on the surface, it looks OK... but the component layout relationships are different than they would have been in a real "N" module, and it looks as if they aren't suggesting Tantulum capacitors... which are a big part of the tone and personality of the unit. At least I didn't see where they said anything about Tantalum caps, though the picture did look like there might have been a couple in there.

Either way, it could very well be an interesting science project...

Tantalums

If you want tantalum caps, the N72 has them. Solid tantalum electrolytic interstage coupling capacitors, 22uF/16V, Panasonic EF series, labelled C8, C19, C22, and C24 on my schematics. They do contribute to the tone, but not as much as the Carnhill transformers, IMO.
