And I must say, we're quite happy about that, because it IS a lot of fun to have people around from other places. On the other side, more local bands are peeking across the borders as well, going to places they probably wouldn't have gone to five or ten years ago.

These times seem to cause more of the big budget studios to close. I am also a mixer, so I am still working quite a bit at my own studio.

A friend of mine from US seems to be doing good in the UK as a songwriter producer, he has brought me several projects to mix. Maybe the UK is where it is at now.

So now that Townhouse is officially closed. When are they going to auction off the gear?

Talked with the studio manager and they said someone is looking to take over the lease. So the studio may reopen in 2007.

Another one bites the dust - London's Townhouse closing

London's Townhouse studios will close shortly. The freeholder of the building has apparently bought back the remainder of the lease. No doubt the site will end up as luxury flats.

the only way the freeholder can buy back he lease is if Sanctuary sold it to him - which if they have must mean that they either:

a) don't want to stay - the group is buoyant but may want a cheaper location and were looking to free their equity asset

b) have done a deal with the freeholder based on property hire rentals rather than lease rentals. Frees up lease capital for higher monthly/yearly payments.

wasn't Townhouse about to close a year ago or so?

anyway, it's too bad. I have worshipped Townhouse for more than a decade, and always wanted to make its studio 1 my home.

Will they auction the equipment? I want that angled wings 4072G+ so bad!

and the Bosendorfer too!

Townhouse closed a couple of years ago.

Al Stone moved in and kept it up and running privately for a while but I don't know of any projects coming out of there since 05.

Far enough...probably 1/2hr by public transport? Rak and Abbey Rd are 2mins apart...

I should be able to tell you a few names who've been in Townhouse since Al Stone took over, but mind's gone blank...

I had a look and that pig is still airborn!

UMG (the music arm of Vivendi) own Sanctuary, yes, but are efectively closing the company completely, intergrating the valuable bits into Universal. They paid £45m for the buildings, artists and rights. The company was far from boyant, it grew as fast as it did by borrowing money and issuing new shares. A sort of Northern Rock of the music business.

Unfortunately, it is all too true.

Townhouse had been doing well under Al Stone, but there were issues with the lease, and when the freeholders demanded certain things, it became too expensive for the studios to continue. I know several of the staff there, and have assisted Al Stone many years ago, and I know they're all gutted.

I'm sure there are more qualified people than me to tell you exactly what sessions have been going on there recently, but I know that Ida Maria's album was done there (on Sony), some recent Stereophonics tracks, and even Bob Clearmountain was in doing something recently. Also, Danton Supple (of Coldplay fame) has been in with several different projects, as has Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys producer). The studios had been given a maintenance uplift and new equipment purchased, and all seemed to be going well ...

Contrary to rumour, because of the shop-fronts and the unusual layout of the building, it is not going to be turned into luxury flats, but has actually been purchased by a church ... which in my opinion, is a complete travesty ...

Hi
That would be a strange turn around, many studios are built in old churches.

News

This is somewhat painfully ironic but..
Does anybody who lives around the corner want to go in and do some IRs of the Stone Room in Studio 2. at least for posterity.

Phil Collins, Geoff Dugmore, PIL etc....

I (and probably audioease too) would gladly pay for the session.
