What's the vibe on the Studer A810 1/2"?

Hi Guys ,

I'm looking for a few opinions here. The studio that I work for , Velvet Sound , is looking for a 1/2" machine and I have been pointed in the direction of a Studer A810 with dolby SR. Has anyone used one of these? What are they like?

We used to have a A80 that was loaned to us and it was ultra reliable. Of course I would love another one of these , or even better yet an Ampex ATR-102... but the prices I've seen lately are around US$4000 - $6000 (double that and you have the price in Aussie dollars ..OUCH!!)

Thanks

D

Hi Daniel,

I wish I could help you here, but I don't really know the A810. The A820 1/2" is pretty much the Rolls Royce of 1/2" machines at studios over here in France (more popular than the ATRs even) and they are excellent machines. I don't know what the difference would be between an 810 and an 820, though. I'd personally go for an ATR or an 820, depending on which machines the mastering studios you deal with or are close to you have.
