Mark Levinson speaks....

check out the editorial by Mr. Levinson in the new issue of Audio Media (pg. 56, mine came today). Nothing terribly new, but a thorough ravaging of PCM in favor of DSD. If nothing else, its nice to know that somebody out there will still get up in front of a crowd and call a turd a turd, no matter how convenient, flexible and profitable that turd may be. And thumbs up to Audio Media for printing an article that slams the products of the majority of their advertisers in favor of production methods that use the bare minimum amount of equipment. See how far back you need to go in any of the other trades to find an article that tells off the whole industry; gear manufacturers, musicians, engineers, no one is spared his wrath. Go girl!

Mark Levinson has always been a maverick himself(probably along with Wilson). He designs the best stuff(also some of the most expensive) and he is not afraid to say it. His ML20 amplifier is to my ears the best there is.

depends on what you are going for. i find his amps kinda boring... im talking listening in a relaxing/enjoyment sense. i prefer audio research stuff over levinson. much more colorful and musical.

Hey Alpha,

Have to disagree with you there. I was talking about his power amplifiers. I think Audio Research stuff is ok, sorta like Bryston stuff. His ML20 is the best poweramp I've ever used(and I've used everything from Krell,Cello,Classe,Pass labs). His newer stuff is also good, but more neutral. Seems like most audiophiles want a faster sound for their speakers.I think an ML20 matches the best with any speaker I've ever used. Want to hear the potential of an NS10, than try it with the ML20. I actually had a pair of NS10's where I had the crossover changed to smooth it out and all i can say is wow!!! He makes a great D/A and line amplifier too.

I tend to agree with Alpha in that Levinson stuff is too clinical and sterile sounding... There are better power amps out there made by a Danish company called Gryphon. These are the best power amps in the world as far as i'm concerned (but then again it depends on lots of different variables).

And of course my ears are different to all of yours....

i was too. they are sterile. boring. stiff. audio research kicks ML's ass IMO. in fact, thats jus the one i threw out there but i have heard many amps that are just plain cooler sounding. and im strictly talking about listening for enjoyment.

I actually liked the Audio Research 600. It made some CD's actually easier on the ears. I've actually thought about using it in the studio as a 2mix coloration unit, sorta what the Hedd does but much smoother.
