Then it will last forever.

I always use the U5/737 chain for all the guitar basses I record and believe me, I've tried a lot of alternatives.

Yeah it’s funny, you look back at the original posts from early 2000’s and well respected posters Ecue - etc... have nothing negative to say about it
Now... if it’s not a 1073 it sucks, GS is not what it used to be, just a ton of trolls now.

There are a lot of high end pro studios that have Avalon 737sp's. I believe Abbey Road is one of them. Someone once said they are just purchased to satisfy the hip hop clients but I rather doubt Abbey Road buys gear to cater to clients. They have a big enough reputation and clientele to not need to go down that path.

I cannot explain why this piece of gear has taken such a beating - I know some find the compressor lacking but the pre, DI and EQ all seem to be quite accepted.

Are there better pieces of gear - probably and even that is subjective so take that with a grain of salt.

If you own one and like it and it works who cares what others on GS say. There are a lot of people that used to be here that I no longer see posts from anymore and I do thing some of the heavy hitters have left the site. For one, so much of the site are posts asking for the BEST this that and the other thing and for the pro's that has to be dull and frustrating.

And for every piece of gear discussed there are going to be some folks who either are going to dis it or who have had less than stellar experiences with it. It is fine to ask for opinions and feedback here but ultimately we all have to make our own decisions through use as to what is good, bad, usable, etc.

I own a 737SP. I do not use it often but not because I think it is a bad pre amp. I just have a few "GOTO" pieces and since I am a home studio doing this for me and a few friends and writers I just do not have the need to use all the mic pre's. I originally had set up to record bands so I bought enough outboard gear to do so but that option went away when I moved into a condo. When I have used the 737SP I have been more than happy with the results at the time.

Why? Old threads are meant to be revived and talked about. Why recreate the same info in a new thread when it is already available in an old thread. Less work that way.

Err, ah, NO. Opinions on the 737 have been all over the map for many years. Some people love em, others have some dislike. Very few people will say they ought right hate the 737, rather that they prefer something else. Had one for many years, but it just never got use because I had other preamps that sounded better to me. I then sold it at a loss. Never regretted it.

I agree. I also find it interesting to read through and see how people changed their minds or didn't...

The day I modded mine with the Babyface compressor mod, it changed the game.
All of f a sudden, the compressor came alive.
Between it and my 6176, I feel covered.

Phil Collins records all his vocals at home on albums that have sold millions and millions .... with an 737.

So whilst his vocals and the tone of a 737 might not be your cup of tea, it certainly won't get in your way
of making it to the top of whatever wall you are leaning your ladder against.

True but if he used a big sounding mic pre, he would have sold even more records.
