I'd have to agree there... I gave it the 'one more chance' I spoke of earlier... to be fair it was better than I remembered in terms of pre & EQ, but the compressor is just completely useless to me.

I struggled with settings on my Avalon 737 for years until I finally figured it out. In the end, it really helped me improve my recordings! When I sold it and put the money towards my Great River MP2-NV and Universal Audio 6176...

Get a Neve style mic instead. Great River, Bae etc. The 737 is junk.

The 737 is a nice Pre/Comp, I'm convinced if you were unable to get a good sound out if it you don't know how to use it (and its not that complicated). Saying you prefer a neve sound is 1 thing, saying a 737 is "junk" tells me you're not very good at engineering.

Harsh, but pretty much correct. I understand many people dislike, even hate, the 737 but it's pretty damned easy to get useful results out of! I find it simple to the point of simplistic. Preamp gain and output. More Pre less output = overdrive, Less pro more output = clean. Just like a guitar amp. The comp and EQ can be switched around and are fully functional even if clinically boring.

+2

Yes, it's been established, ad nauseum, how disliked (overall) this unit is here on GS, and yes, there can often be better choices, but to say it's "junk" just perpetuates the hubris nonsense, most likely spawned from this site about the 737sp. Junk? lol..I own one. Countless "hits" have been recorded with 737's all over the globe but so what, right?

I also used an STT-1 for several years and for all the complaints about the 737's Comp, the STT-1 is just as worthy of criticism and harsh remarks, but for different reasons. It's grabby as F^&* and needs to be arm wrestled way more than need be. I also found the SS mode of the STT-1 to be more or less not worth it, compared to VT mode. Slightly better EQ than the 737, but in the end, short of a more expansive feature set, not really "better" than the 737

Haven't used my 737 for years because it's in storage with a number of other items, but I used it daily and was very happy with the results and while I'll most likely sell it to make way for other 500 series units I need, when I get it back in here, I'm sure It'll get some play before it goes on the market. But maybe I'll just keep it...

The funny thing is they say the same thing about a U87 yet a U87 sounds really good in a 737!

Sounds great on it's own, never liked it in the mix, just does not have the punch or cut threw the mix, to soft, the AD2022 is a million times better than the 737 using DI.

To buy or not to buy, for me, would depend on the price... if you can get an amazing deal i've seen them go as low as $1200. I would grab that in a heartbeat. Even if you have to send it in to Avalon for repair. I've never paid more than $80. Mine has even been DROPPED and it still worked like a charm for years. Yes, It's over built!

It has a sweet spot.

I'm not aiming this at anyone in particular, but most people that I have personally known to generally dislike it just really didn't know how to effectively get around it. Turn it on and if it isn't immediate bliss move on.

There is a lot of gear mentioned around hear that people bag on that I have used and liked. Move the mic, change the mic, more input less output or the other way around.

If anything, in my world, i've never heard anyone talk about it's color.. people complain that it's too clean. That's been my only complaint. Not even a complaint, it's just hard to color if you need color. Get something else..

Right now they aren't "cool/trendy". So if you were ever going to get one now would be a good time.

If you find a better deal on something else, get something else. I have a good bit of hi-end pres. There are some I would keep before the 737 and some I would get rid of before the 737. Price always plays a part.

To me it doesn't. I'd rather use another pre with a u87.

Sure the U87 can sound 'better' with other pres such as V72 or GML but I admit I also thought the V737 is matching quite ok with the good old U87.. at least for modern pop. Certainly better than M149. The funny thing is of course that the only no1 I've been involved with (not that I do that much pop) was with M149 thru V737 on lvox. There you go... Why didn't the apocalypse happen? Hahahahaha

And to me the equalizer section is definitely usable.. the hpf being one of the best found on 'channel strips'. The compressor I've never used/liked but would love to give it a go with the modded comp one of these days. What about the black faced against the silver ones??? Heheh... just joking

I think the 737 is like the Gearslutz version of "that one cheerleader" at your highschool. She's actually pretty cute, but EVERYONE'S banged her, so she's basically chopped liver.

Seriously though, if I hired an engineer and he told me he couldn't get a passable sound for tracking electric bass with the 737, I would be a little worried.

Now if there was a V72 or 1073 sitting right there, and he made a suggestion, that's a different story.

One thing for sure, back when I was buying and selling a few many many years ago, they were selling for a average of 1500, things have not changed, they are still around that.

737, 1073+LA2A, or Focusrite ISA, or Red+1176 behind a C800G, U87, C414 are standards. Why knock the 737. It's solid.

Maybe. I tracked a rapper tonight using the standard U87ai through an Avalon 737sp. Sounded perfect. He was thrilled.

Nothing else matters.

Depends on the application. I had one. It's great if you dont want to buy expensive mics. It will make a decent mic sound great. Bass is badass!

so what does it sound like?
