NEUMANN KM84i Date of Mfg

Hi there,

Recently acquired a Neumann KM84 and curious as to its age, or era. I'm guessing late 70's early 80's.

Serial 39917

Check out the pic and let me know if there is a good resource or even if ya know your self!

Much appreciated!
Jeff

Emailed them a few months ago with no luck... I tried a search on GS too, to see if there was an identical question with a close serial I could ballpark it. No luck.

I'll wait and see what the experts here have to say!

Thx

Check with Klaus on the R/E/P boards... I think he has a way of dating these things by serial number. I have to wonder why you care... if it works, it works... and if it doesn't work, the person who performs the repair work will know what parts go in it.

Peace

If you emailed Neumann they will eventually get back to you, but I think it too a couple of months the last time I asked them.

Ditto. Others have reported a different experience, but the response to my last query about a '70s U87 came after nearly four months. I guess you can be lucky - or not.

Yes - but just think that the Neumann engineer has to do this work amongst designing new microphones or doing urgent repairs to customer microphones to go searching through the archives to find out when a particular microphone was made.

Of course microphone dating has a low priority compared to sorting out a problem a customer may have.

Just be thankful that Neumann offer this service at all - most others don't.

Yes, good points, John. Mine was not a complaint as such - I was grateful to receive the reply when I did. More an observation about setting appropriate expectations for response times.

My pair, in the SN23000 range were made in August 1974 according to Neumann if that helps.

Does anyone know what years the KM84's were manufactured?

If it helps, I had a pair both with serial numbers around 37500, which I know were manufactured in December 1978.

If you read the posts above which say 23000 range was 1974 and 37500 was 1978 - it seems to follow that 26000/27000 are likely to be 1975 or maybe 1976.

They are only worth what someone is prepared to pay.

I am not in the USA, so have no idea of the going rate for s/h microphones there - sorry.
