Pearlman TM1 - which preamp/comp? Condenser Microphones
Old 10th September 2014
I have both the TM1 and Pearlman Church. The TM1 has the deep body and smooth low-mid that is just wonderful. I use it to drive a LaChapell pre...pushing the level so the pre's tube provides peak limiting (no 1176 needed)...then into an API EQ (-2/200, +2/3K, +2/5K)...and lastly leveled 2dB by LA2A. Phenomenal "realism" on lead vocals. The TM1 is quite clean and avoids overemphasizing tube harmonics, so it seems at home with the tube pre's additional fat. On crooning ballads, I'll zero out the -2dB at 200 to catch that larger chest sound. Recommended highly.

On the other hand, the Church is so dripping with harmonics that a cleaner pre seems to work best (I use Davisound and Grace). It has a similar, but less peaky, color as the U87....but slightly scooped in direct comparison, and more compressed, which is often useful. It usually benefits from +2dB EQ between 1.5 and 3K, depending on the singer.

Both mics are so good that they are my go-to mics for new and unfamiliar singers. I'll sometimes use both on the first recording, choosing the best fit. Shrill singers, male and low female voices kill on the TM1...become bigger than life.
