This is just my personal stuff, but I like lots of others as well: SSL Quad Comp, LA2A, DBX 160VU, 1176,
Manley Vari MU, Crane Song STC-8, and to many others to list.
Just recently added a SPL Transient Designer 4 and still experimenting with its
uses which are many.

I Have the following hardware comps:

UA 2-1176 stereo comp
2 x Distressor
2 x LA3A
2 x API 525
I always said that software dynamics could never cut it the same as hardware comps. That was until I started using the McDSP Channel "G" plugin, EQ, Dynamics, Console........very close to hardware. I'm a convert, now I can save money on slowing down on my hardware comp collection. I hear the Waves SSL is great too....need to try them as well.

Manley VariMu-2 buss but I should try it in other places too
ELOP-versatile little bugger
TubeTech LCA 2B-on the drum buss where it sounds great-gotta try it on the 2 buss
Summit DCL 200-still experimenting-so subtle I can't hear it doing it's thing sometimes-must be me
Amek 9098-much maligned, unjustly-you can really hear it doing IT'S thing
Joe Meek SC2-original one-very cool-guitars are in heaven going thru the Meek
UA 1176 (2) and 6176-love the 1176 vibe-nothing sounds like these babies
La2a-vocals
Distressors (2) w\British mods-still trying to find the love
Aphex 651 (2)-always B team but maybe sometimes shouldn't be
All of the UAD1 plugin comps (3 PCI boards worth) including the amazing Neve 33609

Ready to pull the trigger on - Roll 755 Super Compressor (do I need it in my arsenal?)

Compression obsession to the max. Please help.

Yes, you're probably right.

But on the positive side, I'm actually getting something useful out of reading the list of differing applications some folks are using their compressors for.

Drawmer dl402 or 204 or something like that. I use it when I am using my UA 1176 for something else. It's actually really good for what I paid for it. I don't know that much about compressors but this thing seems to be really flexible. Doesn't sound bumbum on anything. Doesn't make you go WOW! though. Anyone out there know of these things?

cheers mate!

My List is extremely small, but useful:

Crane Song STC-8 (mix buss, stereo tracks..etc)
Atomic Squeezebox mono( vocals, bass...sometimes snare...)
DBX 160a (can work well on a violin..etc)
UAD-1 x3 (all their comps) used mainly when looking for something different than the above.

I like to track w/light comp and then during mix down come back out into these comps and track the compressed version. I then have two versions to mix with.
I then slap the STC-8 on the mix bus.
I think the STC-8 and Squeezebox work really well together.
Eventually I'd like to get a very "flavored" stereo comp( Vari/mu style?) to give me that dark , warm option, but I cain't afford anything else right now. :(
Dreaming of.....L2M mkIII.

Here's my mixed 'bag' of comps:

FMR RNC - piano, acoustic gtr.

PeaveyAMR VC/L-2 - vox, drum OH or room

Buzz Audio (ARCs - 3 of 'em) - everything

Crane Song Trakkers (2) - everything

Atomic SqueezeBox - vox, bass

Purple MC77s (2) - vox, piano, acoustic gtr., bass

I rarely compress while tracking (except vocals), and I have a Transient Designer more-or-less permanently assigned to drums on mixdown (kick, snare and OHs).
