Am I the only one my category? Never diagnosed as needing the men in white coats, and no scientific degrees (but DIY as needed).

Vintage 19th and 20th century physics is fun!

Hi Doug,

Nice Studio.
How do you like the Tube-tech CL2A?
Do you only use it for tracking or is it also a good unt for mixing?

Grtz,

Robin
It's not too aggressive but can work well for room mics, great on act gtr, BG vocals, B3. I use it most often on BG vocal sub @ mixdown.

OK I'll bite. But I won't tell you what I use them on, because it changes everyday depending on how I feel. Besides, that decision should be made by you regardless of what anyone tells you.

1- RCA BA6A (serial #56)
4- Urei 1176 (3 blackface LN's and 1 late model silver face LN)
2- API 525
1-dbx 165A
2-dbx 160
3-Aphex CX-1
5-Neve Prism (modified)
2-ADR Scamp S01
1-dbx 160X (broken)

I know I'm forgetting something. Looking at the list, I guess they're all of the 'old school' variety. Maybe I should look for something modern, but I seem to be getting by ok.

Amek 9098CL - Drum buss, snare, tom buss, acoustic guitar, BV's
Purple Audio MC76 - vocals, snare, bass
Tube-Tech LCA2B - vocals, kick, snare, bass, acoustic instruments, sax, etc
Tube-Tech SMC2A - vocals, electric guitars, mix buss, group buss (various)
TC Electronic Finalizer Express - mix buss (for reference only)

Looking to get another compressor that is quite transparent when working. Any suggestions of what I should try out? Similar price range to above units.

Gates Solid Statesman AGC = the dirt box, although it's recapped, new transistors, good film caps for audio. Haven't found a place for it yet.

(4) Aphex Expressor 651's. Direct coupled, class A TI THS opamps, 0 hz to 200k hz, these are my "ride the fader" comps as I can't hear them. Used for vocals, kick drums, electric bass, sometimes for drum peaks.

dbx 166, black face. New that vca's , TI THS class A opamps, MIT coupling caps, very clean and fast. The gates have adjustable attack, release and range controls added to the front panel. Great for bass, program tracks with varying attack/release situations.

Ashley SC-55 stereo. Rebuilt with TI THS class A opamps, MAT-02 transistors for the vca's, large coupling caps with MIT MultiCap bypasses, all Dale RN55/60 film resistors, new high current voltage regulators, large psu filter caps, etc. Great on bass, guitars, etc. Very good low end now for bass, was too thin stock, it now goes flat to 2 hz. I did leave the side chain stock to avoid low end distortion from such a wide bandwidth.

I'll also sometimes use a customer's unit if the time is allowed. I like modified 161's in a true balanced config and the dbx165A when cleaned up.

Since I use these to level out signals or control peaks, it's all I need. I never compress the stereo buss, never have, never will. That's for mastering. I don't do the current trend of mondo crushing rock productions, I always leave some life in my mixes, more exciting, less fatiguing. The rest of you, if you remain in this business will learn about that someday.

I try to use as little as possible... but often times it's a little of a lot of them.

But my BEST two compressors BY FAR are my JH 16/24 2 inch and my Ampex 102 half inch!!!!

Well, Jim, I'd love to say I agree with you about people learning this if they remain in the business.

But the cynical side of me says: the way current trends have gone one should FORGET about such tasteful considerations. Perhaps the way to remain in the biz is to jump on the boat and brutualize everything with over the top compression, overly quantized tracks and over auto-tuned vocals... get to the chorus IMMEDIATELY with a melody more appropriate for a frogs ring tone and then cram it onto MP3 format.

Sad but true?

dfegad

anyways, i agree with your taste if not it's place in todays crappy status quo!
