In my humble opinion...the day we knew these guys by name was the day true artistry died.

Too many people seem to place a lot of meaning on name engineers and overlook the real secret to a great recording: great songs and great talent.

Jack Joseph Tom Lord-Clearmountain might be the bomb... but they can't polish a turd any better than I can.

Not to slam any great engineer or producer... there are many that I personally look up to... but gimme some good mics, a good console, a good recording and mixing area with a great song, great players and a great singer and I can make great records.

So... I pick me!

I'll say me. But I want other musicians to play it, because I hate engineering my own playing.

Hmmm... as long as Tim Friese-Greene and Dave Friddman are around, I'm pretty confident we can make a stellar album.

Well the easy answer is:

Me - tracking/mixing
Paul Stubblebine can master it.

A few notes: I believe that Sir George is extremely hard of hearing these days. When he keynoted at the AES a few years ago I noticed that he had a lot of trouble hearing.

I once was an extremely unhelpful assistant on a S. Husky Huskolds mix session. So to the earlier poster who wanted him to track. Just hear one of his mixes and you'll say:

Husky - mixer

Another AE: I can't remember his name but the dude who did Tom Petty's Wildflowers would be great. IMHOP that is one of the most sublime pieces of rock ever made.

If it was heavy - terry date 'cos hes the master of compression and good tones
(pantera - far beyond driven & deftones - around the fur)

for something a little more organic - steve albini

something off the wall - joe baressi (tomahawk, clutch, tool, kyuss, queens)

I'd give it to the mastering engineer who does 'rock' best.

Oh, I like my rock if you hadn't guessed.

That's easy. Recorderman to set up and run the drum faders,Slipperman to rig and run guitars (ho-ho) and Warren Dent to for the remainer of duties, only cause I want to see what he looks like all grown up.I think after he comletes his"wall" he'll emerge as the real Warren.

I worked on an Ed Harcourt track with him - the Wild Boar stuff. That was a little over a year ago. Not heard a peep from him since though.....

Interesting to see some people picking producers instead of engineers heh

For my own music, today I would like to have:

Drum tuning, tracking & mixing: Andy Johns
Mastering: someone great with vinyl (I'd want ten songs spread over five thick, heavy 12-inch maxis)

Wait, wait, wait.

Steve Albini doesn't produce, and if you've got Albini, why do you need AJ for drums? (I mean, if you don't like Albini for his drums, why do you like him?)

Having said that, two good choices.

Superburtm: AJ is affordable?! -E
