Sometimes STC-8, or DBX160XT with Audio Upgrades.

When tracking Focusrite Compounder with Bass Expand and Huge or D&R compressor/limiter.
When mixing - Summit DCL200 or Focusrite Red 3.

El Distressorio!

Which is Spanish for "The Distressor".

Before the EL8 existed I used the 1176 mostly, and sometimes the dbx 165A.

To reduce the dynamic range: Distressor.

For color/Mojo: whatever you prefer.

Try taming that with a LA-3.

anyone tries to pull that "robin hood's bass" crap on me, i'd have to tame 'em with a 2x4.

I like em better than distressors on a lot of things... must be the transformer.. or the sweepable peak/RMS detector... or the blacklight reactive knobs...

Gates STA-Level, sometimes followed by a distressor. An 1176 is also a good choice. Tracking bass (but not necessarily mixing) through a Manley VOX BOX is cool. Much better than cutting vocals through it IMO. We also have this cool purple tube D.I. that I use on bass all the time, but I forget who makes it. Somebody in New York I think. I'll have to take a look as I plug it in tomorrow.

Focusrite ISA220 when I want it transparent, Then into a tfpro P38 if I want some compression fx or I want to slam it.
A bass plugged into the instrument input on the 220 sounds really deep and clear.

Interesting! Jafrigo I will have to hook my old gates solid statesman up again and see if it still works cos there was somthing about it that I used to like but I just got lazy with plug ins. The old beast used to be quite good at holding a level without fafing about too much. Maybe try a plug in after that not quite the same as a STA-Level but along the sameish lines.
I tend towards using an old Joe Meek VC6 between my bass and Mesa Studio Pre just to even out the break up if I am recording DI Stranglersy distortion.
I think the answer might well be in which compressors not which compressor.

Hi Michael. I see you talked about this on the Skid Row thread. Are you using both the LTD-2 and the Glory together on most tracks or are you using one or the other?

Any reason you don't use an 1176 (my faviorite getting back to the topic of the thread)? Any reason why you don't use a Distressor? Seems like a popular pick by allot of folks. Have you tried the new RND Portico 5043 comp yet? That seems like it would be pretty cool on bass as well.

Not together, depends on what kind of bass is used.

It doesn't mean I DON'T use any other compressors, but right now I like those two for bass, it might change next week, it all depends on the source.

Can you elaborate a bit on your feelings here, which comp seems to work with which bass and style in your minds ear? I have never used either comp before so I am curious to know what they excel at and how they contrast or compare to an 1176 (again my fist pick for bass comp so I have a reference point).

In no particular order and depending on the track.

Distressor
160VU
165 or 165A (peak stop off)
1176
CL1B
Smart C2

Never my ADL CL1000s. Not enough headroom.

It's interesting not one person has mentioned that they use solely a plugin. Occassionally I use the UAD LA2A, but since I've picked up some outboard comps I've been reaching for those more...Distressor and dbx160.

McDSP Compressor Bank.

I usually track with an Avalon U5 and a Vintage dBX 160VU, though. Usually between the playing and the tracking chain, I can get it to tape.

I suppose it depends on the source, but my personal favorite is the 160 VU, more times than not.
