Opto mode (10:1) on the Distressor, what's different?

What makes the 10:ratio (opto) different then the other ratios on the distressor? How does it work differently when being an 'opto' compressor and what is it used most for, vocals?

the opto mode is super invisible - my friend described it as sounding like someone was just riding the fader and keeping the volume super even. you don't hear sucking/pumping etc... i love it on vocals and bass.
