Manley Vari Mu is excellent, very smooth. +1 on the Thermionic. Also the IGS Tubecore 3ru is a great sounding unit that excels on productions with harder hitting drums.

manley Vari Mu, Silky Smooth

Thermionic Phoenix, similar compression to VariMu but more euphoric coloured

Both are excellent

I use a Phoenix and it works really well with a C2

I'd still like a VariMu though ;-)

I have the Gyraf X and it's a great comp!
At unity gain it's quite 'transparent', Pushing the Input or the Output give you diffrent colors.
Thermionic Phoenix is another great piece!

what do you guys use for a nice, smooth all tube compressor on the stereo buss?
I use a Summit DCL-200 on the mix buss. Great sounding unit

Drawmer 1968 sounds like it's doing the tube thing even though it's an FET circuit with a tube front end and back end.

My favorites (this week, but changes all the time) include Vari-mu and Tube tech LCA 2b.

Well as long as we're updating suggestions...I would not change mine but would definitely add another for consideration which is the ADL 1500 from Anthony DeMaria. It does the fast and smooth LA2A style release while holding things in place without even having to think about it.

great 2bus box!!!! No matter what, it stands up and stays right. Dig the slight euphonic touch of sweetness but overall this machine is very effective for a clean response on the mix

Best I've ever heard was the D.W. Fearn VT7. It's still the compressor I want most to be honest. Thermionic Phoenix (Mastering Version) was also really great...I have not really had the pleasure of the Pendulum stuff but it all looks fantastic and a lot of people on this forum have touted them over the years with almost no negative remarks. Manley Vari Mu is great too, and the current version has great features, but I found I didn't need it when I got a Massive Passive...I wound up sticking with my Chandler Germanium Compressors after the MP instead even though it's solid state, and let the EQ tube things up. Still I really want the Fearn...I just can't ever seem to justify it. Soon I hope (I've been putting a Fearn Fund together for awhile now.)

Love my Theremionix Phoenix.. earlier poster called it euphonic... that's an excellent description... really gives a tube halo to the sound. I used to use two EAR 660's linked but now use a shadow hills mastering compressor, which smoother results. ABSOLUTELY do not get the love for the Drawmers!!! got a couple in out of gs-induced curiosity and named them the Smallilizers!!! maybe it's because I have other things that smoke them... but seriously? I've got at least two plugin comps that smoke the Drawmers! Courses for horses, I guess.

+1
This sits on my 2bus, but with parallel processing.
Spent 2 hrs I the phone with Greg to pick out exactly what I wanted.
Couldn't be happier, and it sounds great on 90%+ of everything I do.
(Jazz, 60's style R&B, rock.)
But, I don't seem to like VCA type bus comps like everyone else seems to...

Great shoot-out!
My picks are the Qes labs variable gm and the Retro 176.
They just feature a rock-solid presentation, that wall of sound aural experience, retaining micro detail.

Thanks for posting.

I just got it, but so far I've been really happy with the A Design Nail HM2. Great sounding, just a little tube color, but mostly transparent unless you drive it crazy hard.

Couldn't agree more. I had the Drawmer mastering eq years ago and didn't like it either. Love the gates, not much else.

I'm using A-Design Nail and Knif Pure-Mu combo in 2buss...Works wonders. I've used Manley Vari-Mu and tested TC Phoenix but for me they both seemed to do "too much (softening transients etc)", it seems to me, they don't suit fast music (ie. metal with fast double BD stuff ). Kniff is so transparent, usually 0,5dB gain reduction is enough...It glues the mix together nicely.

Thanx for the quote Jakob!

After 4/5 years that I have GX (and G14), I confirm this quote.
I use it on each mix/master pushing it a little bit
Great also for tracking not only for its compression but also for its color.
Push the output on a vox...wow...big sound.
