I haven't tried them all, but I have experienced most of the classics in various studios over the years. I want my vocal to sound "famous", and these mics deliver:

All around: Telefunken 251

Just as good but maybe less versatile: U67, U47, M49, Soundelux/Bock 251

All others fall below these in the rankings to my ears, but may be fantastic on a certain voice: U87, Brauner KHE, C800G, SM69, M149, Manley reference cardiod.

I have no experience with any of the new generation of clones like Pearlman, Wagner, etc.

I agree for the most part... I can't believe that it took nearly 3 years after this thread was started for someone to say an ELAM251 is one of the best all around vocal mics.

I didn't realize this was a thread resurrection!

I'm big on emptying the mic locker and trying everything available on the first few takes with a new vocalist (if the project has a budget that can spare a few minutes for this).

In a well-equipped studio it's a lot of fun!

A studio I work in frequently has a Stephen Paul modded U67 that has won every shootout so far (no Tele 251's have come up against it though). Losers include:

My own U47, a friend's modded SM69 tube (which is close... but just short of the magic), Lawson L47, AKG 412, U87's (old and new), AKG 414's old and new, AKG C12VR w/ brass CK12, etc. All nice mics but none sounds as famous as that U67!

nothing comes close to a tele 251. i have a pair of 100% mint vintage ones - they're my most prized gear possession by far - and i've been thinking about getting a pair of the t-usa reissues. i've used them (never side-by-side with my originals), but i can definitely say that they're identical.

i love my vintage u47 also, but it always surprises me that it's more hyped than the 251, which is clearly the better mic - at least IMO. but what is "better" anyway? they both sound amazing on pretty much everything i throw at 'em.

Read my lips: SPUTNIK. M-Audio. It's true. Male vox, female, fiddle, horns, (not so much acoustic guitar for me but it is revealing)...I'll be getting it again.

I own a U87...owned a Sputnik.

Mic that sounds very often just exceptional and always at least very good is Brauner VM1 KHE.
Among other Telefunken ELAM 251 can be used on almost anything with perfect result (but should be either faithfully restored original or newly built from original parts, so no Soundelux, Bock and some other clones).
If only one allowed, I would probably pick Brauner.

I'd have to go with the Blue Bottle, it's the best mic I've had the chance to use.

No. No. No. No.

the best all around vocal mic is the one that is most flexible and works on every voice: the M49.

C12 and 251 can be horribly ugly on some singers. I just tried a 251 on Smokey Robinson, and it was so wrong. Went with the M49.

U47 is not happening on some singers, as well.

U67 is flexible, but doesn't have have the presence that a M49 has.

If you have to own one great vocal mic, the desert island mic is the M49.
