Yes you can definitely track with zero compression. I'm usually sm7b>1073>distressor though.

For my home studio;
The vocal chain is, SM7B > GR Pre > MC77 > hard disk.
It just works and I can record anyone who walks into the studio with it.

Vocals and bass are the only thing I track with compression and the Purple works great.

Where the fun happens is during the mix where I'm OTB.
There I chose between a API525 or a RETRO DW > GR EQ32
That for me can really finish the vocal, YMMV

on a side note I prefer the GR pres to my API pres on guitar for the different kind of guitar rigs so far at my place.
SM57 and R121 > GR pres > hard disk, API5500 for the mix.

API pres/comps/eqs kill on drums (and bass) for me!!

In order to not create another thread, I bump this one.

I have a vocal chain of SM7b -> 512C -> 525 -> Focusrite Pro-40.

In general I like the results, but I start thinking I would need an EQ in there somewhere. The natural candidate would be another API, for example the 550B, but it seems to be alot of money just for minor EQ needs.

Anything 500 series for less money suitable for tracking vocals? The new API 565 seems to be made for tracking, but I haven't seen many reviews. What about Lindell Audios PEX500?

I have a whole set of digital tools in the computer, so this chain would be used only for vocal tracking and from time to time to run synths and guitar through it.

Yeah, the tube is not a good friend of your sm7b,
unless you want a kind-of-dirty vocal,
needs too much gain

my chain for it
1073 - LA2A

if I,m using the SM7b for a multitrack recording and can`t use the 1073 for it
use the CLoudlifter preamp between it and my console pres
and the signal comes less noisy than just a high gain level of the console pres

Normally, I use in that vocal chain the Sm7b 2 filters ON
HP and mid boost, unless is a nosey voice

Lately I've been using a lot of either:

SM7 -> SSL X-Rack VHD pre -> 1176 Rev A -> SSL Alphalink SX
SM7 -> Great River pre -> DBX 160XT -> SSL Alphalink SX

...or a variation of the above combos. SM7 always flat, no foam, but with a pop shield.

Fantastic sound... i'll add some 12k ITB sometimes, and it usually requires a bit of de-essing (especially if through the 1176), but it's worth it!

SM7 > Siemens V276 and CS Trakker
SM7 > AMS Neve 1073 DPA
SM7 > Manley Dual Mono Mic Pre - a bit noisy and not that nice on that 60db setting
