All room mics in phase with snare.

Didn't use the Coles on kick.
You had me at “Coles”!
Such great drum mics!

Jealous.
I only set up what i can play with some semblance of timing, as I‘m not a drummer.
When demoing my own tunes, I find it easier to play some basic groove myself, than to waste time trying to program something.

Drums usually get recorded to a backing track of rhythm riffs, small percussions and click. When done right, I even get away without timing correction.
If I need a tom break or cymbal accent, I‘ll overdub it.

It also helps me in placing the drumkit as *one of several rhythm instruments* instead of the closet lead feature it has been for quite a while now (heresy, I know, especially in THIS thread...)

You'll need thimbles. The ones I use on mine were my Grandmother's. I put a guitar strap on my washboard.

Player was very much into his retirement and this washboard had been handed down to him.

"It's been repaired a few times" he said.

Good thimbles can be expensive, so thumbtimes I like to record drums without thimbles and overdub them at a later thtage when I can borrow some really good ones.

I like to put rivets on my crash thimbles.

Dub Ska session with Cajon.

Overheads; Microtech Gefell m200 - Great River
Cajon Snare; Beyerdynamic m201 - Focusrite

Didn't bother with rear port as tracking over kick led sampled drums.

Here is my baby.. An old Gretsch with a Ludwig Supraphonic and Some Zildjian K Cymbals.

Overheads: Coles 4038 -> Daking MP4
Kick: AKG d112 -> Daking MP4
Snare: Yamaha mz205 -> Daking MP4
Tom: Yamaha mz205 -> Focusrite Saffire 40
Floor Tom: Yamaha mz204 -> Focusrite Saffire 40
Room: Yamaha mz205 -> Focusrite Saffire 40

All run into a Motu 16A and then into Logic Pro X.

The Yamaha mics sound pretty good except for the room mic, but I wanted to try it out.. and I definitely need to replace that Focusrite with another Daking.

Here's my bass drum array, e902 in the hole, and M88TG on the front head.

All of my close mics are dynamic mics, the only condensers are the KSM137 "narrow ORTF" overheads, and the Beyer MPC67 boundary mic as the mono room mic.

Toms get EV CO4 for racks and D112 for floor, SE V7X on snare. I can't get a good angle on those for the camera since the drums are in a corner.

My newest "weapon" is the Waves API 2500 compressor which just slams when you dial it in right.

I use the Waves 2500 for drum parallel on almost every mix. That thing it pretty damn cool.

Here's my little contribution. I built this studio a few months ago. I bought the kit - a new Gretsch Renown.

Kick - RE20
Snare top SM57
Snare bottom - Octava MK-012
Hats Peluso CEMC-6
Rack Toms - Senn 421s
Floor Tom - ATM25
Overheads Peluso P-12s

Going into Metric Halo ULN-8s 3d. Sometimes Millennia HV-3D.

This was a fun one and a little different. I originally wanted to do a REALLY minimal mic'ing for these sessions, but we only had a few hours for drums and each of the songs seemed very different. More than likely, not all the mic's will get used on any of the songs.

My AEA R88 is getting fixed right now, so I had a pair of R84's that I wanted to try as spaced overheads. I generally don't do spaced stereo overheads with this big 30 inch Slingerland because the kit becomes spread out and it makes your image really wonky, so I split the kit diagonally and kept them high and wide. This placement also kept each R84 closer to one cymbal than the other. I wanted to add some space with the overheads, but more than anything I still wanted the cymbals to feel hard L/R.

Overheads: AEA R84
Mono Over: OtavaMod MK-012
Close Kit: RCA PB-90
Snare Bottom: Vanguard V4
Kick In: Sennheiser 602
Kick Out: Vanguard V4
Toms: Sm57

Ha, funny enough that was one of my first concerns moving it over there. It seems like you should, but I haven't had any issues! It's also a "biggish" room (500 square ft. with 10 ft. ceilings), so it's not like a lot of the sound pressure is getting trapped and making the piano resonate. If it were a smaller room, it could be an issue.

I thought the same thing a few years ago Jules.

So I bought one. $15 off eBay. I bought one with a nice patina in case I didn't like recording it.

One of the best backline investments I've ever made. It's in constant rotation now. Played it on dozens of tracks with everything from pencils, to paint can openers, to spoons, to fingernails to guitar picks. I have a pretty stiff guitar pick that's my favorite at this point. I have never done the traditional thimble thing. The washboard has been a money maker for me. I just got a second one. Haven't broken it in yet.

PS - tried all kinds of mics. Most everything works, but a lot need some to a lot of LPFiltering come mix time. Right now, I've kind of settled in on a favorite KM86. I want to try my copperphone though.....

Can't tell what's more gorgeous, the finish on those drums or your living room

Loving those huge mic-count setups, I'm always impressed by folks that make those work. The level of patience needed to mic both heads on every drum, multiple room mics, etc and manage it all in session is beyond me.

My current setup has gone through a bit of a change, now running...

Kick in: Senn 441, was D12e
Sn: Senn 441, was TAB 57
Rack Toms: Senn e604 inside, was 441 outside
Floor Tom: Senn 441 inside (barely fits!), was 441 outside
Overs in XY: Chameleon TS-1, same as before but previously were used more as cymbal spots, these are now high and XY
Room: Altec lipsticks in cardioid sitting on the piano in the other room

Here's what they sound like (no room though) ...

I lose a little of the extreme stereo from spot micing the cymbals but the off-axis is better sounding and the "kit picture" is more useful. I really like the 441 on kick though I still love the D12s too. Mic'ing the toms on the inside is great for stereo sep and off-axis issues ... but requires extremely careful tuning and mic placement otherwise it sounds pretty weird, definitely won't work for that flat no-resonance thud that the rockers seem to like. Personally I love max resonance and ring on kits, give me some good old fashioned hardware rattle and creaking too.

OH : M160 - VP26 - RND542 - Rosetta 800
FOK : Joly modded Ribbons in MS - ULN8
Room : Oktava MK012 (Joly modded, omni caps, spaced pair) - ULN8
Kick : MD421 - VP26 - BT50 - Rosetta 800
Snare : Sm57 - VP26 - BT50 - Rosetta 800
Toms : M88 - ULN8
Right Knee : M88 - Zod IDDI - ULN8

The room is pretty narrow but it sounds pretty good (I think)

I removed a few dbs around 450Hz with the MIO eq on the room and FOK going into PT, and I gated the Toms inside PT. No other processing involved.

That sounds not half-bad. The snare rings too much for me - not sure how much of that is the room, or the snare itself.

It’s the snare. I’m with you on that. You can’t really “un-ring” a snare. Get that thing cracking but not “Donging”! Try the wallet/sandbag/gel/etc....or not if you want the ringggggg.

It's indeed the snare, but with a little eq and a wall of saturated guitar and bass, it's not really an issue to me.
