Teaser: I have been playing drums for 35 years and have never bought a new custom drum kit. On Jan 4th I ordered a new Custom Series DW kit (Exotic Royal Ebony: 8,10,12,14,16,14x6.5, 22) and DW is delivering early. I will have them in the studio tomorrow and will mic those bad boys up and post a few. I am like a little kid at 46 years of age.

I did something somewhat unique today to capture a late 70's vibe. No room mics and concert toms mic'd from underneath! Sounded pretty awful, but the isolation was great, and it worked for the track. Some reverb and tape emulation really helped round things out.

Kick - Electro Voice PL20
Snare - Revox M3500 Top/SM57 Bottom
Toms - SM57's
OH - Oktava 012 spaced pair

You can listen to the whole track, or I can post the isolated drums if people are really interested.

Hey, thanks a lot guys. There was some weird resonance on the close tom mics from being inside the shells, that's all. Some more patience with placement would have probably helped but I just used a little EQ. What sounds "good" on its own isn't always what's right for the mix.

Dennis Holt in the booth

R88 overhead, 421's on the toms, SM57/T58 top and bottom snare, SM57 hi-hat. My 60's Ludwig champagne sparkle super classics, Dennis played his Black Beauty or a DW 15" snare

The mobile absorbtion panels, do they absorb both sides or is the other side reflective?

Thanks, Alex.

Had Vinnie Colauita in to play today with his whole kit, which was a little more than I usually have to bite off. 24, 12, 13, 16, 18 and two snares. Tele M82 in the kick, Bock iFet outside, AKG D24s on the snare top, with Beyer M88s under, AKG C414EBs on all the toms, AKG C460 on the hat, Lucas CS1s on the OH, and Coles 4038 and Beyer M160s on the rooms.

BTW, might be the best drummer alive. Just insane.

It's a good one. I usually use one of my D12s, but I decided to go with the M82 today for some reason. Wound up using one on the Melissa Etheridge record I did in 2014, and it came out really nice. Liked it so much, I bought one for myself. First time I've found a mic that I could use instead of the D12, and be happy.

It's a small room. I have them as far as I can get them from the kit, pointing directly at the wall. The 4038 is about 8 feet straight out, pointing towards the front of the kit. I compress the living crap out of the 160s, and just put a touch on the 4038.

Awesomeness! Is there any way i can hear a sample how it sounds? Would you eventually send me a pm? That would be so cool. I also have a small drum booth and i'm still learning to get the best sound of it.
Btw, Vinnie is the best drummer alive, no doubt in it. You are very lucky, sir.

Would be even more interested in hearing how the CS1 overheads sound by themselves though it's a hard to see how they were positioned. Was slated to receive a pair just when Oliver so regrettably passed.

Here for the gear

Here are a few photos of recording a reggae band live in the studio.

The drums are Pearl Reference, and the mics and preamps I used are

Kick IN --> Yamaha MZ 204 --> API 512
Kick Out --> DIY Sub Kick --> Presonus
Snare UP --> Shure Beta 57 --> API 512
Snare BTM --> Shure SM 57 -->Presonus
Snare Side --> Shure SM 57 --> Great River MP-500NV
HH --> AKG Perc 150 --> Presonus
Tom1 --> Audix D2 --> Apogee Ensemble
Tom2 --> Audix D2 --> Apogee Ensemble
Floor Tom --> Audix D4 --> A-Designs P1
Overheads --> Neumann KM 184 --> Apogee Ensemble

While I usually record rock drums and use the sound of room, in this recording I wanted more tight sound so I ended with more than 15 absorbing panels around the drums.

Looks like 87 and 47 FETs. George Tutko (RIP) mic'd it up. He had just returned from working with Geoff Workman (RIP) on the Cars first album ..this was in '78.

been trying to figure out a good way to mic this kit in my bedroom.
STC 4038 (pre - coles) on FOK
Wunder CM7-GTS on side
Schoeps CMC6 MK22 in front off to side and pointing at snare
All equal distance to snare.
All same distance to a Revox PR99 MKIII tape machine via a Prism Titan.
I dont have a studio so just doing stuff in my bedroom.
Im not a drummer so this is just random hitting just to test mic positions.
Trying to get that jazz sound.. No EQ or compression or automation, just tape and panning.
Sorry for the poor quality iphone photos.

Cool.

Would think it was his regular 10, 12, 14, 16, 22, though. His NOS Jasper shells.

He seems to be favouring only that Craviotto aux lately, for everything.

Idea on the main snare.
