Here's two of my recent sessions. Both set ups were the same drums and drummer, but different spaces and micing techniques. The first clip is a 3 mic setup in a treated space using Millennia HV-35 preamps.

Mono Overhead - Model 2 Ribbon
Kick - Model 2 Ribbon
Snare - 57

Second session was in a very live, large, untreated room. More mics on this session going into a Focusrite Liquid 56.

Overheads - Model 2 Ribbon
Kick - Model 2 Ribbon
Snare - 57
Toms - Studio Projects C4

Boths clips have no processing.

Fun pic from a session last night. A beautiful 1941 Top Hat and Cane Ludwig kit. The producer wanted to try something different and, so I stuck a 421 about 18" out front of the kick, put a 47 OH, put an AKG D24 directly next to the 47, and another D24 over by the tom, in isosceles triangle formation with the top one. Everybody got some EQ on the 8068, and kick and 47 were panned up the center with the D24s panned hard LR. The 47 wound up getting some serious 1176 compression for size and aggression.

That kit couldn't be cooler if it tried.

Mark, it's a well known artist, so I can't share. Looks like the set up will be used on a bunch of the record, with Rick Marotta playing. If all goes well, I'll tell you who at the end of the week.

I love simple kit setups like that.

Aw, that's sad. If you get a chance, you could always play it yourself and record a little bit of it!

I'm going to try a set up like that soon!

A setup from my latest drum recording session:

Sonor Hilite 20" kick drum -> AKG D20 at the sound hole -> UA 2108
Sonor Hilite 20" kick drum -> Shure KSM353 outside -> BAE 1023
Yamaha SD493 piccolo snare -> MTG MD100 on top -> UA 2108
Sonor Delite 12" rack tom -> AT ATM23HE -> Tube Tech MP-1a
Sonor Delite 14" floor tom -> Beyerdynamic M99 -> Tube Tech MP-1a
OH-> 2x Beyer M320->AEA RPQ
HH -> Fostex M77RP -> Shadow Hills Gamma/nickel

Cymbals used:

- Paiste Traditional 14" hi hat
- Paiste Traditional 22" ride
- Paiste Twenty 16" thin crash
- Paiste Twenty 10" splash

The soundfile is without any processing, only faders up. No eqs were used during tracking (..the MP3 degrading hurts...!).

Enjoy,

Steph

I hate to be nitpicking, but that 421 looks more like it's 3-4" away, rather than 18".
Unless you were measuring from the beater head, or it got moved for the picture...?
Either way, I'm sure the whole setup sounds killer!

It was the photo angle. Optical illusion. It was 18". It was aimed at the middle of the head, if that helps you figure it out.

Last night I pulled out the 1964 Slingerlands. I used a sE1R fairly low behind the drums, the usual ATM23he on snare and e609 on hole-less front BD head

I forgot to take a pic of the MC012 w/Omni caps taped to the floor ala Steve Albini.

The M88 and GT/Alesis AM52 were just on stands, but not plugged in.
