For tracking voice and guitar at once in an old-time country style, what do you think:
Royer SF-24?
Royer SF-12 (any reason to prefer it to the SF-24?)
AEA R-88?
AEA R-92?
AEA R-84? (I have it and love it, but was interested in trying something else).
A Wes Dooley clone of the RCA 44?
Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams all have been recorded through u47s . On he stopped loving her today, a u87 was used. Earl Scruggs has been recorded through a u67.
I've auditioned many mics on George Jones, and the older U87s with the cream colored PC boards ( and in good shape) are a really great match. Some of his older work is an M49.
What about those Royer high output ribbons SF-24 and I forgot the mono model number. Anyone have any experience with those and Country voice/guitar tracking?
Thanks....the responses so far have been very helpful!!
I just did a session like this last night for an older guy.I used a sm7 and a Sm-81 on his Guild and it sounds pretty good. This was the first time I tracked a guy singing and playing guitar at the same time.I tried a TLM 49,Rode K2,Cad ribbon,Baby bottle but the Sm7 with a Avalon 737 sounded the best for this guy.
I have a mic that I use sometimes for rock vocals, and I'll be darned if doesn't frustrate me because it sounds too country. Don't get me wrong, I like country, but not mixed in with a hard rock production. So anyway check out the clones from Lawson mics in your area. You will find that they have a stamped country familiarity about them. tlh
