I've got a Studer A800mk3 24 track sitting right next to a Studer A80mk3 24track. Over and over again, I think the A80 sounds far 'tapier' than the A800. Granted the A800 transport is a thing of beauty and a really well built machine, but the A800 sounds much more linear for lack of a better word, than the A80. And the A80 is worlds away from the Scully 280 8track sitting next to it!!!

My experience is that my A800MKIII sounds "tapier" than my A80.
Sometimes, people ask me to record their music through one of my tape machines.
Then I use a Revox A77MKIII which gives me the "tapiest" (what a word ) effect.
Using the Dolby A on the A800 gives a change of color too.
I never heard of a Scully 280 but it looks like a very nice machine too!

Dolby A is a whole other ballgame! I agree, it can add that next level "tape-y" sound! Why isn't Dolby A a plugin?
What version of the A80 do you have? Is it a mk2/3/4?

It's an A80-R MKI sadly without meterbridge...
