Upgrade Options

Hi Slutz,

I'm wanting to upgrade my studio. I run a mobile rig from a Mackie Onyx 1640i. I'm about to build 8 Sound Skulptor 312 clones and 4 1073 clones to upgrade my front end. The next thing on my list is conversion & scrapping the 1640i.

I do all my tracking on site and bring the stems home to my mixdown room which at the moment has a Mackie Onyx 820i as an interface. I occasionally do the odd overdub from the mixdown room also.

Buying 2 sets of high end A/D D/A is not in my budget so I was wondering how some of you guys would handle this kind of setup considering I want 16 channels multitrack in for site work.

If you're only talking 16 channels, get a Lynx Aurora 16 with the LT-USB card and it will work for both your mobile and mix room setups and you'll be able to easily swap between without any trouble. Plus you can use a laptop on the go and a desktop in the mix room if you want.

There's also the option that a lot of people have chosen, which is to have a latop with the LT-USB for mobile use, while having a PCIe interface in the studio. A couple simple cable connections and you're up and running.
