spot erasing on Studer 820? Virtual Instrument Plugins

spot erasing on Studer 820?

There is a dedicated spot erase button on our 2" 820, but nothing in the manual on how to use it. I have tried the button in various combinations with other buttons, but can't get it working. Is there a trick? Thanks

Identify the spot you want to erase by going into edit mode and scrubbing (note whether you are on the sync or repro head) and mark the spot with a grease pencil. Enable record-ready on the track and press the spot erase button.

Roll the marked spot on tape over the erase head; press Edit and Record, and scrub back and forth a few times.

Hit stop, rewind a couple of seconds, and play. No pop/click/squeak etc.

The capstan and reel motors are disabled, and the record head is not energized, only the erase head.

There is no need to go back and forth a few times - on pass over the erase head will do it fine. I would recommend learning the part / sound / section you want to erase in reverse and running the tape over the erase head [in "spot erase mode"] backwards... other than that, the previous post was spot on.

Also, I've always found it good to hand-roll the tape somewhat close the actual tape speed. If you go really slow or stop, weird things can happen (thumps, etc).
