Hey Brad. Would be nice to get an official statement from CS.
I'm pretty sure they know exactly what we are talking about.
Something tells me they know about the issues and don't have an easy fix. Hopefully I'm wrong!

Thanks for your support Brad.
I already had a convo directly w/ tech support this week.
the unit went in to CS last January for the diode mod that was supposed to fix the issue .
this time my unit blew a mains fuse as a result of the constant reset issue.
the original word from them is the remote will quit when starved for voltage.
they supposedly did the mod to the unit to resolve this issue.
unfortunately it did NOT solve the issue.
I was also told to use a shorter VGA cable.
I've been through 4 different cables including a new one they sent back with the unit after the servicing.
no dice.
based on the other posters on this thread, seems like a design flaw to me.
my studio power was recently upgraded and have a console plus old plate verbs,4 racks of outboard etc.
this is the only piece of gear in my room that does this so called "voltage starve thing".

the bummer being I really enjoy the sound and functionality of the Avocet.
That said the Shadow Hills Oculus is starting to look very attractive.

Or if Slate Audio ever decides to sell the remote section of the Raven on its own as a single product.
I'd be all over that if it was in the Shadow Hills - Avocet - Dangerous price category. Don't need all those cues either (to save costs).
A digitally controlled analog controller with iphones or ipads acting as 2nd/3rd remotes for talkback/volume control/monitor switching/etc is a dream. As long as the bare-bone app given to the client consists of the talkback button and talkback button only. Would be a disaster with volume/monitor switching controls!

Hi,

I have had one for a few years, and while I have found that you don't want to hit "reset" with headphones plugged in, (insta-Pete Townshend anyone?),
I have not had any of the above issues.
It is used hard about 20 hours a day, every day.
Please let us know if you find the resolution.

Yes:Monitor controller with iPhone / iPad as a remote.
Makes perfect sense!

We should pressure Steven into releasing that monitor section of the Raven on its own, like he's going to do with the touch functionality next year.

No updates on the issue but I did hear there is a new version of the Avocet coming out with an updated remote with more features and updated d/a. Interesting...

I went with a higher rated fuse on the main unit- 750 ma.
seems to fail less..still when you hit it hard volume wise on the remote it does the reset.

also heads up I saw the New Shadow Hills unit at NAMM.
totally wireless remote, sounded great, incredible build quality..light weight, aluminum body?
compact.
also the volume knob had a very smooth expensive feel to it.
around 2.2k hard wired remote.3k w/ wireless remote.
the range is really good.

How would you compare it to the Avocet, sound-wise?

it was pretty quiet on the namm floor were the SH unit was but not that quiet..so with out getting it in my place I couldnt give you a valid review.
from what I could tell turning it up through the barefoot mm27's it did sound very good.

Hi guys n gals, I'm in Avocet hell and looking for any help you guys have! My Avocet has the power cycle cancer. It's the most frustrating experience I've had with a piece of gear.

Cranesong has been very quick with responses but has no recommendations to make this thing happy. They say power sag is the culprit. My power from the wall fluctuates thru the day from 116V-117.7V what are you guys using to get constant 120V to make this unit work? I wanna run the thing over with my car right now. It's the only piece of gear in our studio that has this power issue. I love the Avocet when it works.

If you're referring to the auto-rebooting, I don't think there's a fix for it. I remember having that problem too and what a nightmare. Try an outlet w/o anything else plugged to it. That seemed to work when I had an Avocet.

Just wanted to check in with other Avocet users.

My unit/remote has started to reset again more then ever.

Wondering if the new updates do it as well.

If so, as much as I love the sound/functionality, it may be time to move on.

Too frustrating.

Bump!

We are experiencing the same problem with the Avocet installed in our room.
Any update on how to fix the issue?

Cheers,
Andy

Just plug it into a ups(uninterrupted power supply) should fix your problem.

Here for the gear

I have an Avocet II, and the right speaker outputs have been going in and out. Switch the XLRs and it just happens on the left speaker, which tells me it's an Avocet output issue. Anyone else ever dealt with that on an Avocet?

Avocet II user here. Plugged into a ups; no auto-rebooting, and no speaker outputs going in and out.

Cheers.

on higher voltage draw days [ie hotter days] my avocet still does the shut down thing.its on its own power outlet on a furman power conditioner.
bummer because its actually a part of the design.cant see lower voltage than 110.
this is the only piece of recording gear Ive ever had do this.shuts off then reboots when the led's hit red on the remote.

I'm in the UK and had this happen for the first time the other day. Remote reset itself twice before the whole Avocet unit shut off completely. After taking out the fuse it was obviously damaged, and upon replacing it have had no issues since. Not sure if this is what happened, but I'm thinking that maybe the fuse was damaged somehow so the Avocet wasn't getting enough power hence the Remote shutting off as it gets it's power from the main unit. I think this because whilst the remote was resetting initially the Avocet rackmount unit itself was still powered on [until the fuse gave out completely].

Anyway, no problems now. I'm going to call KMR tech in the morning to clarify, any thoughts on my guesswork physics please chime in!
