Vintage mic accepted standards / references?

Considering the fact that even well-cared-for specimens of classic mics often differ widely in tone, where do the manufacturers of clones, soundalikes and other vintage-inspired models take their sonic cues from?
I can understand the desire to recreate a certain vibe that one associates with great music, but how can you KNOW if your version of the 251/C12/U47/U67 really nailed it?

I tried them side by side with the real thing.

It was surprising the big name mics that sounded great, really nice, but didn't sound like what they were supposedly emulating. And that may be an important consideration. Do you need a perfect copy of a 251, or a mic that sounds great? Granted, if it says "251" in it's name one would reasonably expect it to sound like a 251, but on the other hand, how many people would ever know the difference, and if you can cut great tracks with it....

Anyone else?
Would be nice to hear some manufacturers' opinions on this, or would that be giving away too much?

This is only a guess, but perhaps they rent vintage mics from well known and respected collections and graph the frequency response, transient response, etc. of these "classics". Like a Wally Heider U47, an Ocean Way C12, etc...
