Mic & Pre's for drums - rate my setups - post yours

please comment on these configurations.

I would like suggestions on room mics.

I use Drumagog 5 to fill out the drum sound sometimes,

Not a big fan of the SM57 on toms. For snare drum prefer a dynamic/condenser combo.

Agreed!
I'm normally sticking with Senn MD441 top, Neumann KM84 side. On toms I'm using a variety of different set-ups until we pick up a couple more MD441's. A/Bing a Unidyne IV and a (Chinese) 57 (which I thought were the exact same compenents in a different shell) actually let me hear the difference between the two and now I sometimes stick a Unidyne IV on floor tom. On the recent sessions I've done I've been pretty impressed by the results, although I think the 441 sounds slightly better.

Making space so the drums don't take up too much in the event there are tons of layers of guitars and vocals at the end. I like to use mics that have very tight patterns with extremely minimal bleed from everything else so the muck in between each hit of that drum is easy to get out, especially on toms...

Kick - Beta52>>FiveFish x12>>DBX1066
SnT - Beta57>>ISA220
SnB - ATM650>>Burl B1>>DBX1066
Tom1/2 - Cad M179>>GAP Pre73 TT Mod>>DBX215
Floor Tom - EV PL33 - ART Prochannel
Oh - Cad M179>>Manley Dual Mono>>ProVLA (both with JJ ECC803's)
Room - Cad M179>>Vintech 1272>>RJR Buss Comp w/ Lundahl Output
Hat - sm7b>>SSL Alpha VHD

This setup, for me, sounds awesome in my room and on multiple genres.

Try AT4047's for room mics. Very BIG and smooth. If that's not attainable, CAD M179's sound great on everything as well. If I had more I'd be using them on snare as well. They have a very tight pattern that helps to keep the hat out nicely.

With a quad of 312s, a quad of Porticos, a dual 1073, and a couple singles, I'd stick the 1073s on kick I & O, the 312s on snare top, toms, & floor, and the Porticos on overs and rooms. Leftovers get snare bottom and hat, and then change it if something screams suck.

A couple of Fatheads can be fun room mics.

You can't judge a setup without knowing which kit is being used,
which music style, and in what room it's being recorded.
All these factors are essential for the proper mic choice, preamps
and the room it's recorded in.
Let's start with the kit you want to record.
Which kit?

Love modded (Lundahl's) 205's on room. My favorite. OH's get Gefell M71's or sometimes KM84's.

I'm really not sure what you want to know. Safe to say you have plenty of stuff to do a great drum session. Assuming of course that the drums, the room, and the drummer, and of course you are as good as the gear.

If I had to add something I would get a pair of Coles 4038 for rooms or overheads.

Aside from that, everyone has an opinion as to what they like, but I certainly wouldn't complain about your choices.

Thanks for the wisdom all.

Rest assured that the drumkit is one worthy of tracking.
The house kit I have is USA Ludwig "Rockers" with a Black Beauty snare and Zildjian A Customs all around - it sounds great for rock
Pop and Rock is my mainstay but not Metal.

Keep in mind that drummers bring their own kit so I have to make do, like the rest of you all do.

The room is very nice but not perfect.
