First of all why would you need all those comps to track?

Second of all if it was a dream studio i would have 2-4 of every comp ever made.

And thirdly what dream studio has no Neve 2254's, SSL FX 384,Manley Vari-MU, Focusrite Blue 230,Gates Sta-level or Fairchild 670?

Id pass on the DBX 160A compressors and get the 160x or Xts!

In my dream studio I am not repairing and recapping old equipment.
(During my younger "tech" years I did enough of this).

Mr.Thrill, any comparison between:

Fairchild 670 and ADL 670?
Focusrite Blue 230 and Focusrite Red 3?

p.s. thethrillfactor, I have come to trust the comments you share here on Gearslutz as
you seem to speak from actual experience and not just some marketing hype.
Or repeat what “some friend” said.

For tracking, some of the choice ones you mentioned, but only a few (with the option to rent something if needed). Having that amount of compressors for tracking would be self-defeating. Unless you're doing a Steely Dan record or something along those lines. They would be distracting and not condusive to recording good music, IMO. By the time you find the "perfect" combo with all those things, the possibility of an inspired performance out of the musicians will have most likely passed. Then what do you have? And, you can always compress later.

Now for MIXING......that's a whole different story!!!!

Just off the top of my head I'd add DBX165, DBX160 VU, SSL 4k Channel compressor, Daking compressor, API 2500. I'd replace the UA compressors with the originals. Especially for the 1176. NOT the same.

Look at Michael Brauer's gear list for some good ideas (he's got a few).

I've only heard the new ADL 670 once and what i heard i liked but it wouldn't be enough for me to say yeah or nay.

A Blue 230 is a RED 3 with all of the things you mentioned.

It also has the trannies on the ins and outs as compared to the Red 3's which only has them on the outs(but you could ask Focusrite and i am sure they can make it this way).

Also its no longer manufactured.

On the Gates STA-Level note i know someone at the moment who is planning on reissuing a new super STA-Level(based around the one he rebuilt for me).

It won't be based around the 6386 tube though(on my Sta Level i sometimes switch the tube based on application).

And it will have multiple presets for different sounds(like what he did for me).

And you can use it as a micpre if wanted like you can on the original.

I have no idea about price but i gather it will be what the going price is for a used one($1600).

He is my tech and he rebuilds and mods all of my vintage stuff.

Right now though he is backlogged with his own stuff and other rebuilds he has to do for other people.

Looks like a Fairman TMC,
Tube Equipment Corp SR-71 comparison is needed.

MIKEHARRIS, thanks for the info. Have they mentioned
an ETA?

my favourite ones for tracking most instruments at the moment is a custom compressor my tech has designed which is almost identical to the 1176 in 4\8\12\20:1 compression, but it has added 2:1 mode with a softer knee which is very usefull for less obvious compression and combined with a dual time mode it's a very versatile monster , and instead of the make up gain preamp of the 1176 it's using a Neve Ba-183 based circuit with original Marinair (Neve) input trafo's and a custom 1166 output transformers (same one used in the 1272) these are killer compressors heh and they are going to be the compression part of the custom desk I'm working on , but i meanwhile using them as outboard
