Chandler Germanium Comp - what are...

... your favorite settings, whether you're tracking vocals, instruments or for using it as bus comp???
I just received one for a 14-day test, but I'm a newbie to this "compression-while-tracking"-thing. May I ask for some inspiration???

Check the videos from Wade..
It's not a simple comp it can do a lot of differents things playing with the germanium drive and feedback compression etc.. so check the videos and take your time playing with the monster

One thing I can tell you is that when using the Germ Comp for tracking, I always gravitated to the Germ Soft or Germ Med CURVES, with MIX set to somewhere around 1 or 2 wet. I always spent some time messing with the balance of Feedback/Drive to get just the right amount of flavor saturation.

I love gear with more knobs you can swing a stick at, but tracking with that compressor was too fiddly for me, way to many options, and most of the time when i'm tracking i don't want to keep people sitting around while i try 20 different configurations till i find what i want. It's a very colored compressor, so when tracking with it you're stuck with it, which can be cool or a nightmare down the line, especially if we're taking vocals.

I thought for mixing it was very very useful, some of the best bass sounds i have ever gotten were through that thing. Parallel drums and guitars where nice too. It really is quite cool, but for tacking...good luck.

I posted in detail about how I use a pair of these for mastering duties in this thread:

Thanks for your replies so far...

... after checking out the unit for a week now I have to say that I'm really really really impressed by what it does. I started out tracking acoustic guitar through an AKG 414 > GAP73 pre (modded) > GermComp > SSL AlphaLink. I found a setting that I liked and recorded two rhythm tracks. After panning them in my DAW together with a nice drumtrack, I was just blown away. The guitars sounded very smooth but defined and were... just... THERE!!!! I only had to do a few eqing and that's it... I will try more stuff inside this week, especially vocals and electric guitars... man, this thing really rocks...

Vocals: Clean Comp;Input 11;sidechain out;ratio 4;Germ Med;1 wet;attack 2; release2;drive 9; feedback 3.

Also try putting a Jim Williams modified Aphex Expressor after it for some transparent limiting during tracking.

The Germanium is a great comp for vocals, very transparent and keeps the original texture of the voice.

Got a demo unit today. Already have two Zeners and lusting for more Chandler stuff and Wade himself turned my attention into these (the germ stuff seems to be a darling to him...). I think I agree that there are perhaps too many options on the unit to not get distracted when tracking. But for mixing it seems very versatile. Just barely got it up running, but enough to get impressed. I'd love to hear from more owners. Favorite applications etc etc
