microphone has nothing to do with mic pre choice.

use whatever single mic pre you're using on the entire record

To each his own but I love API on alot of tracks but I find them to mid foward for a lot of vocals especially with SS mics.

I'm with William on this, especially ...

in the case of the Blue Bottle (I own 2).

The important thing is to match it to the right sound source. The Blue Bottle has worked well for me when used on dark sources that need some sparkle and cut. Latest use: the dark baritone voice of an older jazz singer. Any of my straight wire with gain pres do just fine in that kind of application.

And as wwitman said, use what you have. I don't think there's a preamp out there that could make a good-sounding source into a Blue Bottle sound bad.

All microphones and preamps have their own individual color. Then each combination creates another hue in every mix. If you can't hear the difference, then it may be time to see an ENT specialist.

My AMS-Neve 1073 is absolutely fantastic with every condensor microphone I have, but it does color each one very heavily and starts sounding somewhat "homogenizing" after a while. So, I use other pre's for different mic's and difference applications. I have several Focusrite Pre's, an ISO 220, 428 quad pre, a Red-6 and they are all much more transparent than the Neve. But we love that color, you say! True enough, but sometimes you want less color in the sound. Especially when using SDC's for recording overheads, acoustic instruments and percussion. but that's just my taste! And I'm entitled to be wrong. :-)

Now, all that being said, I have no experience with the blue bottle but someone here does and will be able to add what kind of color the bottle has and what kind of pre compliments that color.

It would be VERY interesting to read sections on each microphone type/model and have participants rate various pre's vis-à-vis the pairings.

Best regards, good luck and Merry Christmas

That would be a good thread especially if included an audio sample !

I treat the blue bottle with original B6 cap like I would Sony 800g or Manley Ref C being that it is on the bright side. BAE 1073 is my choice for those type of bright mics. But I only use those mics for vocals. Used a Great River once w/ Blue Bottle and it worked out fine as well.

What is it about preamps, preamps, preamps?!stikeheh

What kind of color the Blue Bottle has depends on what capsule is on it. With a B7 cap the mic is in the 47 camp and perhaps a tad brighter. With a B6 cap the mic takes on more of a 251 tone, very close. In both situations the mic presents a big and dimensional quality to the signal which calls to mind the spacious analog recordings of the sixties and seventies. I would not want to use a highly colored preamp on the bottle with either of these two caps unless I was going for an effect of some sort, such as distortion, in which case I am just as likely to patch in a compressor. For that matter the bottle's output is strong enough that it will push a compressor plenty hard all by itself with no preamp behind it.

I'd be a lot more inclined to buy another bottle and/or a full set of caps than to worry about preamps if I already had enough nice clean input channels. Then maybe look at getting some fun compressors, UBK fatso, 1176, drawmer 1968 - lots of pretty colors from subtle to infinity out there and some not so pretty ones for those nasty moments.

Enjoy your Bottle! If you'd like to hear mine on some rock vocals PM me and I'll send you a tune or two or I can post them here if you like. But don't ask me what preamps I used. I don't remember

Yeah looks like I'm gonna have to
Get a 1073 are the vintechs close enough to give a good judgment or do you need to drop the full 3g's on a BAE or Neve ams? My wallet is not gonna like me after this and by wallet I mean wife!

An audio sample of Blue Bottle on dark vocal...

Just a rehearsal, but the vocalist (an 82 year-old baritone!) is using a Blue Bottle. Preamps -- all Yamahas in the Steinberg MR816csx.

His vocal was sludgy -- this crisped it up. No EQ used.

Boy, do I agree with this. The whole point of getting a microphone that has a "sound" is to use that sound to enhance sources for which it's appropriate. The idea that there is a specific mic pre for any particular microphone is for the birds. Pick your pre based on the style of music, the source, the desired vibe, whatever, but not because you're using "microphone x" and therefore there must be one "best" preamp to go with it. Any preamp you buy should be bought with the notion that it will be useful across many microphones in many applications. Your choice of preamp for a particular application/source should be based on what you are trying to achieve at that moment in that application, whether it's brightness, depth, richness, clarity or in WW's case, a consistent color and vibe across the whole project.

There are lots of excellent preamps out there. Obviously the Neve is one of them, and lots of people like Neves on vocals (a specific choice based on a specific application). But there is no "best" preamp for the Blue Bottle or for any other mic. It's all application dependent.

boy do i agree with this

i would add that in our way of working we had to create the backing track and partially mix it (using a scratch vocal), befiore we counld decide on the mic and pre for vox. because the vox has to cut the mix, (or sometimes only enhance it)

and so we filtered our set up down to a Triad of pres, each capable of taking the source/mic combination in a very definite direction.

1) V76s - Immediate, and Rich, a conjourer of natural harmonic colour

2) GTQ2 mk3 - Deep, thick, real , eq is able to highligt any aspect of the source, while keeping it natural

3) Orpheus pre -The crispest pre imaginable. clean yes, but in a good way.

unfortunately 2 of these now have to be sold.

but it is with the satisfaction that many great recordings have been made with them. And, the resale value should not leave us at a significant loss

ymmv tho

Here is a comparison of three Blue Microphones: the Mouse, the Cactus and the Bottle. All of these are going through the Warm Audio WA12-500 MKII.
