no they are a beast of their own to a degree.
sweet discreet op-amps pushing a massing chunk of iron, but they work so nice for acoustics.
when i first got one i thought bass and kick or just adding some mojo, but they have proven to be much more.

take a look at what i wrote here.

I am not so sure this is an accurate statement. At the very least the 512c stands on its own irregardless of its past. I never got to do a side by side comparison but have used various vintage 512's and became accustomed to the sound. When i bought my 512c's I didn't think for a second I was getting a worse experience. If you are going make such claims, post some audio clips or else you are contradicting what seems to be a unanimous opinion. The 512c rocks.

That would be my very first purchase!
Still a good price if they're as good as you say they are, but did they just jump up seriously in price!? I thought they were < $500 just a week ago or so

Sounds like a 512c but you also get an output pot aswell which is so usefull and allows for much more flexibility in terms of tonal shaping.

Ive never been a huge fan of the API pre's on vocals but i did recently use one of these on backing vocals, the Purple Biz on lead vocals and they both complimented each other very well.
