Favorite Kick/Snare comp?

I can't find the "definitive" kick / snare compressors:
These are my impressions on what i have:

API 525: can't set the attack time
SSL G desk compressors: not so good, can't find the right attack time
1176: not so good
distressor: almost good, but...
dbx 165: very good on snare

on protools: Focusrite D3 almost good

what do you use?
Thank you

What's your problem with the distressor? It's about the most flexible compressor there is.

Have you considered that you just don't like the sound of compression on kicks and snares?

if you like the D3, maybe you'll like a hardware Red 3.

maybe you'd prefer some sort of tape saturation (plugin/hardware box)?

I think that the distressor is very flexible and i use it a lot.
But now i'm looking for some "character".
I like compression on kick/snare.
I also have the Transient Designer but don't really like it...

What do you use guys?

Alan Smart C2

I love love LOVE the Alan Smart C2 for kicks and snares.

I know, most people think of it as a buss comp, but just on those, maaaagic

(And yes, different than the SSL G-series, which I also have)

When I want funky...
Symetrix 501 or funkier yet Symetrix C100

Funky to clean Distressor - not much you cant do with 'em swiss army compressor, 1176 (take your pick of flavor... purple, blueline, blackface, whatever), Manley Vari-Mu, can be very clean and very weird, choose your setting wisely.

Clean - Jeez where do I start... GML!!!!!!!!!, STC-8, 33609, 5043,could go on but i'll stop

then there's plugins.... I'll leave now...

Maybe instead of one comp clamping down you should experiment with two?

I know the shop here uses an 1176 first, doing about 3-5 db, then after some eq a distressor doing 3-5 again.

the less compression on drums, often the better. But sometimes you need it, especially with a bad drummer or drumset, and certainly with both.

my choice:
SSL 4000 dynamics on kick
dbx 165 on snare in parallel

both can be done also with distressor with very minor loss of good compression, so minor you won't notice it in a full mix. I would buy a distressor for this but if i have the choice and don't have to pay ...

distressor or 165 on snare
la2a or ELOP on kick

or none, or mild parallel. I prefer the last most often.

I use either some John Musgrave modded V series compressors and or a Distressors for the kick and and a really like the Channel In The Box Compressor with the MM button in for the snare. Also on the cheap side Aphex 651's will work really good for both

If you're making rock music, you might want to take another look at those SSL dynamics...

And there's very little a Distressor won't do on drums.

I get a sweet low + serious smack/pop when I run a D6 (inside the the bass drum) into my Daking pre then into my 1176. I posted my recent settings. Some may not like slamming the kick that hard with the compressor, but the sound just makes me drool. perfect for what I seek. my secret weapon!

I love my LA4 on kik. I have 3 of them, but only one rocks. (weird!)

Also, sometimes, Distressor, DBX 160x or Valley Dynamite

For snare - DBX160x, Focusrite ISA, Distressor, Valley Dynamite, Smart C2...Whatever works.

Thinking of the kick, there's not many articulation variations possible. For such a rudimentary - static sound, why not just "drum replace" with whatever sound your looking for?
