According to Wikipedia he retired in 1992, after Iron Maiden's Fear of the dark album.

He was a great! Love his job on Maiden's Powerslave.

If you are a birch fan you know the maiden stuff but alot of the early Deep purple, Whitesnake and I think his best record Assault Attack by MSG. Also DIO and Sabbath as Mentioned even a couple BOC records that sound really really good Peice of Mind PowerSlave are great.

guys like Andy Wallace, Rick Ruben and Mutt get alot of love & rightly so but Birch is right up there talent wise. He really was the first Metal producer along w/ say Tom Allom.

his guitar sounds-
his drum sounds
his band sounds--

yeah, to me, he's somehow a bit overlooked, but when you read the credits it reveals he was driving the bus on a great number of pivotal bands that prop up the genre nicely.

My vinyl copy of Killers rips my face off every time!!

I would love to hear him wax a little about making records!

Wish he'd come out of retirement for one more Maiden album.

I used to like Kevin Shirley but his work with Maiden has been shocking imho. Dull, quiet vocals, dull quiet drums, rough mixes, no mastering...Someone needs to stand up to Steve Harris, and clearly Caveman ain't the man.

He really stood out in the 80's with his crisp drum recordings. Everyone else was rolling around in plate reverb and his drums cut like razors.

For 80's metal, Martin Birch and Rick Rubin knew how drums should sound.

Am I the only one who's "Hypnotized"?

Agreed. However...If I am not mistaken, he also engineered "Hypnotized" by Fleetwood Mac. You want to hear a cool, cool track ? Don't know why, but I love the drum kit sound on that one, and the layering used (on the harmony and guitar riffs) is golden.

Check it.

Differences between headphones and speakers for this one - depending upon one's proximity to the speakers / place in the room etc, can be quite entertaining (to compare).

Seriously, great stuff.

Mark

I have had that conversation with my engineer type buddies as well. Compare the two, Birch Maiden versus Shirley Maiden, and it is jaw dropping.....

MSG's "Assault Attack" is my fav metal recording. Great band captured perfectly! The Maiden stuff and the Dio records set the bar for rhythm section clarity and punch. Martin Birch sir, you are a genius!

Oh Lordy, Martin Birch.......

Don't wanna sound like an ass-kisser BUT those of us who engineer Rock stand on the shoulders of giants like Martin - and in fact....

Purple, Sabbs, Wishbone Ash, Whitesnake, Maiden. Just doesn't get any better.

Sir, you defined Rock Music. End of.

awesome drum sounds, Cozy was like bonzo! The Mob Rules drum sound also has that roomy huge bonzo flavor . Appice is incredible

I like the drum sounds on slide it in and piece of mind the best also assault attack is a just an insanely good drum sound. They were all great. The Birch produced records are like a lesson in
the balance between perfection and feel. Its both there. It's what makes them some of the best sounding records ever. Powerslave is flawless

It's all that's missing in today's music
