SPL Transient Designer Dynamics Plugins

This is probably obvious, but you can draw in volume fader automation rides to help create a more dynamic performance. I find myslef doing this on one-takes where parts are basically sight read without as much dynamic interest as there would be with more rehearsal.

Well I think SPL might be the right company, maybe a different product though. I just posted the other day asking about an SPL DynaMaxx compressor, but nobody seems to know about it. I want it for compression/limiting, but one of its big features is the "De-Compressor", sounds like it does what you're after:

from the website http://www.spl-usa.com/DynaMaxx/in_detail.html :

"DynaMaxx also premiers a new facility, the De-Compressor, which may be used to counter the effects of overcompression in previously processed source material."

I've ordered one, waiting for delivery. If you don't get something figured out by then I'll give it a shot at reprocessing for you if you want.

Try this trick -

Mult (or copy) the bass track to two channels. One channel stays normal. The second channel is EXPANDED heavily (or even gated) so that the peaks really jump out.

Then mix just a LITTLE of the expanded/gated track in with the original. It will add some extra Ooomph to the first track.

If there are literally NO dynamics in the original track, the Transient Designer would not work anyway. You would have to do the manual drawing of fades, as suggested above.

Anyone on here got a SPL transient designer??

I use the 'Dominion' plugin a lot which is supposed to be the same kind of thing... but I was just wondering if anyone has got both of these and how they compare... does the hardware SPL blow the freebie plug out of the water???

I've been using one lately, it's cool- though not all the time. but when that's the thing you need, it's the thing you need. Sometimes I'll chain it with my AU modded 1178 to get outrageous pop on the attack of a snare or kik.

I haven't used any similar plugs so I can't make a comparison.

yeah I know what you mean...

Ive just used the Dominion on a drum sub group & just made it thump...

Im happy with the Dominion, but ive never heard the SPL in action... suppose it might be like, I was happy with my desk EQ till I got my outboard EQ, know what I mean...

The TD is a magical piece, sometimes one just isn't enough. I've yet to see a plug that even comes close.

I often try the plug-in options first, but I almost always come back to the TD hardware (the oxford transient modulator is very good, but a PITA on mix systems due to its variable latency)...

I've been wanting to try he Oxford. Does the latency vary depending on your settings?

td4

currently there is no software that comes close to the TD4.
higly reccomended.
Sometimes after heavy compression on drums, the drums are too long sounding.
this unit can shorten the sound like no other.

I have a bunch of plugs that offer more flexibility than my SPL but none of them can
touch the robust sonics. I put it on kick and snare (don't like what it does to cymbals)
and sometimes bass or r guitar.

I've got a TD4...believe it or not, i used it today to master a hiphop album!

I've tried a few of the wannabee plugs, and to me, they just don't have the same rubbery, organic sound of the TD.......i'd love to see an improved TD with better sound and some more controls (hold, attack release). thumbsup

I may be wrong but i seem to remember the TD2 has balanced jacks instead of xlrs... flame me if that's my false memory kicking in again...

I think the one at Lingo is a TD4, and I believe it's balanced TRS as well.
I've found that when I turn up the attack past a certain point, around 2:00 or 3:00 it induces some high frequency distortion- a little xtra click, and visible in the waveform. That may be the edginess you hear.
Of course, as often as not I use it above that threshold.

TD4 here...does things that nothing else will do. On some sources you can practically move the mic away from the source after you've already recorded it. I've found it very useful on kick and snare in almost any context, and it can do just truly bizarre things when you need to really tweak something in a dynamic/non-eq kind of way.

just to make sure: Jan is right. The TD2 comes with unbalanced 1/4 inch TRS, the TD4 with balanced XLRs.

i second that. i own the td4.

but still i use it often, above all for kicks and snares and percussions.

i like it also as a fx: eg drum bus. put down the attack all the way, then hardly compress plus a distortion effect plus a stereo phaser. i blend that to the original sound. gives some nice dirt without all the transients

The TD4 has saved my ass when a drummer hits like a little girl. Also shortening the length of a ringy (in a bad way) snare is quite usefull. That being said I use it on perhaps 20% of my sessoins.

there is just one thing with the transient designers:

they change the sound character even if you bypass

that's a pitty, but with a patchbay you can prevent this easily
